Eh, Dingwall is more "Custom Options" than "Custom Shop", at least in my mind. It also makes a bit of sense to allow artists more freedom for their builds. If everyone that placed an order could do something different, it'd be a 6 year wait right now (and likely much higher pricing). I do hope that ones with extraordinary builds end up being options for us plebs since the programming / tooling changes should already be done (unless they really put hands on it to make it vs updating CNC GCODE and so on).

Yeah, I’m really referring to basic options. NG2 pickup spacing on an ABZ, for instance. If 3x is possible, why not 2x?

Do any of you have any experience with the Peavey Cirrus 6, Dingwall ng3 6 and the Yamaha JP2? I'm wondering how the low ends compare?

I did have a JP2, I do have a NG3 currently and I’ve only played a cirrus 5 so it’s not really a fair impression but I did find the JP quite scooped with a nice thick tight low end. The NG is gonna be more open and even across the range. The low end is more focussed then maybe any bass. With the DG in the NG you can of course dial up any thickness you prefer between the low mid and bass pots but it will remain clear and focussed.
The cirrus is a great articulate sounding bass. I love the sound of a cirrus.

The NG is also inherently more aggressive than the others as well. It can be tamed but it wants to Growl.
The NG also plays and hangs way better then JP2 but having not played a cirrus six I can’t comment but the 5 hung better then the JP2

I’ll be honest though, it’s kind of BS that only “celebrity” players can get off-menu items. Especially simpler stuff like a pickup delete like the AB from a couple weeks back with only a neck pickup.

Thank you. The “off menu” shutdown seems to be a panic-driven mandate. This is likely due to having hundreds of outstanding custom orders and no time to entertain custom work.

While Dingwall is not a “anything goes” custom shop, the option/possibility was on the table to do custom variations and unique bespoke finishes 24 months ago when I reserved my build slot. My spot came up to start the build and I was told “nothing off book” by the dealer. It was actually a struggle to get a simple metallic finish that was often done over the years but not on the list.

I wasn’t asking for a crazy or exotic build anyway, so I’m really not disappointed. I would be if I was expecting to have a couple custom adds or features you could normally get at the time of initial deposit but all of a sudden couldn’t when build time came around.

It’s also entirely possible that endorsed users that are posting photos of just-received instruments with exceptional custom work were ordered years ago when options were more open. Preferential treatment has limits in a high-demand small-output manufacturing environment.

That came about because a lot of tech players were getting "called out" in comments and other videos as not really playing in one take. All of it is partly why I avoid posting videos. So many people just want to be negative and find faults, rather than just enjoy the video. I'm not a fan of the reaction, but I'm less of a fan of the cause for it.

Cool! That synth pedal sounds pretty neat, too. I actually tend to skip over a lot of metal Dingwall cover/playthrough videos since so many people just chased that Nolly sound and it's been a bit overplayed at this point IMO haha So thank you for NOT doing that!

You are welcome! The C4 gets some good use in this band. The second effect I use in the clip is a light -1 octave I use to thicken up sections of other tunes as well. Since we are just one guitar live, I need to fill some air.

I use a fat moog synth envelope sound on one song- it's always funny when people hear it live, they look up and realize it's coming from the bass. Not what they were expecting!

That's not a funny story. I thought once you order your bass, you get what you ordered, even when it's no longer on the menu. If the build can be changed at a later date, ordereing another custom would be a no-go.

I mean, they're a small custom shop who are backlogged 3 years with orders. I'm sure they, the experts, did a bunch of calculations and figured what could be taken off the menu to shave some time off builds.

Remember that the profit margins are pretty narrow in that kind of work, especially to the perfectionist, meticulous level they're doing it, meaning that expanding premises/hiring more staff to increase output is a massively risky venture.
