Bummer, might just need to live with the original bridges. I think they want to use up existing factory stock before switching over. No telling how long that is going to be...

You can replace them with the black version. I currently have a Payson on my C5 but will be going back to the black Hipshot solo bridges - whenever I find some time

The D-bird I just got has one. All holes are covered and everything works great.

Do you have a picture of the Payson on a Dbird, pretty please with sugar and everything?

I’d like to switch out the bridge on my Dbird, but not route the body or try to bend an aluminum bridge. Is it flat enough that only minor gaps would be at the ends?

I can just barely get my fingernail under either bass or treble edge, but not at all in the center. A previous owner did the mod, but I wouldn't have had any qualms if I'd installed it like this myself.

A bigger issue is that some of the threaded inserts for the pickup screws had been pulled out from the body, evidently because someone kept torquing them down when they meet resistance from the foam and surgical tubing under the pickups instead of taking either of those elements out and trimming them. I had to super glue 4 of the 6 back in place and they're serviceable, but if I do eventually get it repainted, I want to have the threaded pulled, plugged, redrilled, and reset.

It’s funny how the whole enchilada comes together: bass, strings, electronics, amp + cab vs modeling, fx/processing, etc.

I have been a tube amp fan and have enjoyed Ampeg, Mesa Boogie, Orange and more on bass. My prior batch of Dingwalls, whom I loved but ultimately felt they were too sterile with a lot of amps sounded amazing with my Orange AD200b. It was from 5-7 years ago when I was Dingwall + Orange.
I had an Ampeg PF50t until ~6 months ago. I loved my Dingwalls with it. Note: I would not characterize my Z3x 5 with DGTC pre or my Super J(P) with ACG/East EQ01 (filter pre) as sterile.
Awhile back, I was thinking “I loved having an AD200B with my Dingwalls, I think I will grab one despite it being a bit overkill for me currently”. I haven’t wanted to admit it but I have been fighting this amp half the time that I use it. The Ampeg could handle dirt well but it had a great cleaner tone too. I might be going back to that smaller head.

I think calling Mesa sterile a bit funny!!

not sure what Mesa you tried but it musta been kicked pretty hard in the gonads to get classified as sterile!! Heheh

I have the same problem with a couple of pickup screw inserts.

It’s not enough of an issue to mess with, yet. But if I was changing the bridge, I would pull the pickups and fix it. And look for somebody to shoot a clear coat and metallic flake over the color shift blue.

I don't know about everything, but a Mesa 400+ into 2 410 Goliaths was sterile. I much preferred my Eden Taveler into Eden cabs. Used the Mesa 810s for outdoor gigs.

Your post made me scan my memory to recall any encounters with a 'sterile' amp, and I discovered one. The I-Amp 800 from Euphonic Audio. Paired with an Acme B-4, it was just too clean for my taste.

I was calling my old Dingwalls sterile sounding. They were a little too clean.
I have only had a Mesa Prodigy, I like it but liked the cream of the Oranges more. Now, IDK, it’s the Ampegs that are calling me.

One of the custom Dingwalls I parted with was a 2012 Super J/P-5. Indigoburst over a swamp ash body and maple/maple neck - a real beauty. It was clean and clear all across the board. I picked between it and my Colaburst over chambered ash/maple/morado SJ-5, and the latter won. For lack of better descriptors, the SJ-5 is more organic and woody.

Now that I think back one it, the SWR Goliaths didn't sound great with the Eden WT. It could have been the Goliaths, not the amps.

The Orange definitely has a sound and I certainly know the feeling of wanting a certain sound.

When I first got the Z with a Glock I was surprised with how clean it was and how used to I had become with the baked in DG sound of the NG and having mids at my fingertips. It was more about reigning in the NG at first where the Z is patiently waiting, ready to be unleashed.

Actually I found the SWR 410s sterile in my limited experience with them but the 400+ has a pretty strong resume that says otherwise.


When I think of sterile I think of bergantino. awesome, clean, articulate, powerful and crisp…. But lacking unique flavour or character.

Every “legacy” Mesa head definitely carry their own unique character.
From the 400+ to the bass buster(not really a fan of this one) to definitely the carbine and walkabout.

Nothing sterile in that lot and their successors like the TT800 or WD800 are without a doubt far from bland or devoid of character.

I actually spent 15-20 minutes perusing the local shelters' websites before TB yesterday since my girlfriend has been talking about getting another cat so this was on my mind.

Her boy is getting older and could use a buddy. He definitely needs more exercise too. Her friend just lost 2 cats to a snake (damn Florida!) so she's freaked out. And I'm in the perpetual doghouse so it seems like a fine time for a kitten!

He also enjoys a good gigbag. I keep the Dingwalls tucked away as he'll just crush and warp them but lately his thing is trying to squeeze onto the pedalboard bag.

I'm spec'ing out my build and I'm really early on the waitlist, and I don't want to nag Dingwall with questions. So, I'm trying to do my homework so that when my number comes up, I have a firm answer. I want to go with something "vintage flavored", well, at least as vintage flavored as a Dingwall can go. So, I've settled on passive and I think I have just about everything settled on except for the pickups. It seems like the deeper I go down that rabbit hole, the more options pop up. I settled on FD3 pickups, then I see FD3-N and FD3-V options. I think V is for vintage and they use Alnico magnets, but I don't even know if FD3-V is still a current option. Does anyone know? Also, I wanted to raise the bridge just a bit on my D string on the red ABZ in my profile picture, but the screws do not want to budge. Do they use Lock-Tite and I just need to give it some more force? The "stop, don't be stupid" instinct kicked in at the level of force I was using. On my ABI, the screws turn easily. So, that was where I'm confused.

I wanted to raise the bridge just a bit on my D string on the red ABZ in my profile picture, but the screws do not want to budge. Do they use Lock-Tite and I just need to give it some more force? The "stop, don't be stupid" instinct kicked in at the level of force I was using. On my ABI, the screws turn easily. So, that was where I'm confused.

They do use thread lock, once it breaks you'll be good but every time I've made that adjustment I think I'm gonna break the allen key.

Wenge is the standard wood, if I remember correctly.
As far as I know, it’s a bit of a pain to work with it due to dust splitters, but if DW uses it as a standard wood then it must be due to durability and good overall performance.

Personally, i’d pick more based on looks than anything else.

Are you sticking to a maple neck or also considering something else?
