Hi Dingwall owners!

I briefly owned a NG-3 6 string and ended up selling it again.
My main complaints were:
-Too heavy (4,6kg)
-Too punchy/aggressive sounding
-No real treble control

The overall ergonomics were less good than on my Le Fay six string.

Now I have a chance of buying an ABZ 6, which is at 3,7kg and passive.

To those who have owned or played both: Is there a notable difference in terms of ergonomics between the NG-3 6 and the ABZ 6 ?

the 6 string ABZ I used to own was about 8.5 pounds; comically light and supremely balanced for a six string. Excellent bass, just fell out of love with playing 6 strings.

I have not played the NG or combustion basses.

The six string AB-1 I had was excellent in every way, and well under 9 lb. I recall it being closer to 8.5lb. Perfect balance.

It had the bluEQube circuit and was passive. Best sounding Dingwall I’ve had. And the whale pool flamed maple top was beautiful.

With lots of watts and a couple fEarfuls, it was everything I needed.

They come and they go, this one is the only one I miss.

I’m a four string guy now.

I’ve put all kinds of flats on my Supers but that’s one set I haven’t tried. I have a set kicking around too that I just took off my ‘73 P. Personally if find them to be too stiff under my fingers on a parallel fretted bass for my liking so I’ve never even contemplated putting them on one of my Supers. I typically go for T.I.‘s.

TL;dr, No but it’s possible.

No issues whatsoever. And I use a drop tuner (D) too. I love the feel of them.

I’ve been wanting to try the LaBella low tension flats, I liked the way they felt on a buddie’s short scale.

Seems like once I put the TI’s on a bass, that’s it for changing strings. If I sell the bass, the TI’s might not be part of the deal. It would be like selling a favorite pair of jeans or boots.

Now that I think about it, i had a set of light gauge labella flats on my former Super J once. I liked them, but ended up going back to rounds.

Did you have any problems with TIs’ fit at the nut? On my ABZ the open A was rattling a bit and I had to fill the nut ever so slightly with carbon/loctite to prevent the string from moving.

damn dawg!! Curious what the final resolution with be for ya. I hope it’s good and smooth and with minimal pain.
I am not clumsy but I am often broken with the antics I pull(when not playing bass). I’ll be mighty pissed off if playing bass is what hurts me next.

I made it through 2 gigs this week, so we will see how it progresses. Doing my best to keep it in the splint.

I'll say it again, the fanned frets/neck shape are making it SO much easier to play with only 3 fingers and not having to contort my hand to fret notes. I would be miserable on a parallel fret bass.

Nary a rattle here on my end. Maybe the string tree on the Supers makes a difference there although n/a on the A string.

I can only speak on my ABZ4 vs my NG3 4, but the ABZ is the most comfortable bass I've ever played. Ergonomics, neck, weight, tone, etc.

Man, kudos for diving in and pulling that off! No small feat. Good luck on some hopefully rather quick recovery!

I've never had a 6 string NG, I had a 5.

I did own a 6 string ABZ that was only 8.5lbs. Very comfortable instrument. The reach reducing pin on the Canadian models may help with comfort for you.

The aggressiveness will depend on the pickup and preamp set up on the AB you're looking at.

The NGs have fairly aggressive pickups.

I had both. Main difference was the neck profile. ABZ 6 has a slightly thinner neck than NG3-6, which made all the difference for me.

I got an NG3-5 recently, and went to put a new set of Schaller strap locks on it. It seems that the screw that comes with it is a little too large for the hole. Schaller offers the buttons with small, medium, and large screw sizes (the kit comes with M), but I've had to order the S size from Europe because I can't find any in the US. I thought I would give this a try before potentially splitting the wood or drilling a larger hole. Have any of you put Schallers on your NG?

Get a drill and measure the screws and match a slightly smaller drill bit. Do NOT attempt to force screw in the screw with Matt finishes. I have seen horror stories of cracking or listing the finish.
