Good advice! I will offer 2k and see if he counters. There is a natural finish used Combustion available for 2k that has been sitting there unsold for a while so I may offer that as an argument for my offer.
Yeah, sure. Again, the price of production models is bonkers. I got a used custom for 4k euro, so paying over half of that for a production would just feel... Weird.
If you are patient, for 3k you WILL find an ABZ or an ABII and Super PS and Js. Just have to be patient.
I let multiple 3k ABs of various kinds slide by me before I had the money for it. On the Swedish market, no less. Which is tiny compared to everything else.
Funny that you say that because the same guy is selling a passive afterburner 1 for just over 3k but I don't really know anything about them. Is that worth copping?

Yeah that AB looks pretty sweet...purple too...yeah I'd grab that one. Either way it's a great opportunity to check out both production & Canadian models and see the differences. You could make an offer on both and see which one he wants to move more.

And beyond aesthetic reasons, Dingwall wenge necks are AMAZING.
Just to be clear, this bass doesn't have a wenge neck. It's a maple neck with blacked out heel and headstock. Wenge fingerboard probably.
We are in a strange place for musical instrument sales. In general, people are spending less on non-essentials. At the same time, a lot of people bought a lot of gear during COVID, at higher prices. Now folks that are looking to move gear that they bought at a premium are looking to recoup most of their spend.I would say that this is “eventually a buyers market “ meaning some folks are dropping prices and selling their stuff after it sits for a long while.
Very desirable/rare items will still sell for decent amount.
All that to say, I would go for that Purple AB all day over the import

The big take away from one vs the other IMO is do you want the DGTC or does passive work for you?
both will sound different but great. The neck on the AB may feel better but the NG may be a gem too.
I like purple but if it didn’t sound or play right for your tastes I’d still hold out for one that calls you.
as for things to watch out for, like already mentioned, check the usual stuff but the production Dingwalls are made very well and lemons are rare. Canadian model lemons are rarer yet depending on how it was cared for. The add looks respectable and so hopefully the treatment of these instruments is the same.
If you can swing it and get a fair price on it I’d most likely be leaning towards the AB
It looks like a nice build.
Remember to ask what strings are on these basses. Stock Dingwall strings are nice, and if they both have the same strings, that would help in the comparison.
They may be stainless and you might be a nickel guy, or vice versa. If you like lighter or heavier or a different outer wrap metal, there are plenty of choices.
I’d want to test that the truss rod reacts to a 1/4 to 1/2 turn, all the pots do what they should, no noise issues, and weight.
Value wise, the AB is more reasonably priced, while the import is close to new pricing.
Cash and carry give you a bit more haggle room.
