I feel I’d go for the basic Z. Main custom spec would be neck wood for me as the electronics are all interchangeable

You can’t lose. Just a different flavor of awesome. Start out simple, put in your deposit to hold your spot and by the time it comes up you’ll have yourself convinced that you need a Prima Artist. Heh.

I'll also chime in that, if for you, you get a singular chance to check all the boxes that you want, then you should definitely check all of those boxes. To me, it would be unfortunate to still end up with an amazing instrument, but not exactly what I wanted. You'll have plenty of time (especially right now) to make up any money difference. If you have say aggressively two years, that's not much extra each month for really spec'ing precisely what you want.

Do you already have the bridge on hand? If not, you might want to wait just a little bit, their bridge that is purpose made for D-Rocs is nearly ready.

I lean towards the loaded AB, over the Z just because the weight difference can be significant.

I’ve never experienced the Z or prima, and I’m sure they are amazing. The average weight of the Z’s seems to be a few pounds higher than the AB. That’s probably the bigger body and premium woods.

I also like the more compact AB body, and the sweeping curve from upper to lower horn. The chambered AB 2 with f hole is super cool.

My idea of “loaded” at this point, is fancy paint and lots of Luminlay, and maybe if I asked “pretty please, with lots of cash on top” an ebony fretboard. I’d let the paint shop loose on a metallic flake, candy and ghost flames hot rod extreme theme. Matching headstock paint.

Passive, and keep it close to 7 lb, even if it means two pickups rather than three. Super fatty bridge, split P in the sweet spot. I’d expect a upcharge to route in that option, but I’d be fine with a standard P in the neck. I like the hybrid tone thing. A four string. Detuner on the E.

I’d be super interested in what kinds of weight range the various Dingwall models have. For myself, I’ve found that my D-Roc and 2 D-Birds (all four-string models) are within 0.4 pounds of each other (8.06 to 8.46 pounds), and all four of my six-strings (three NG3s and a Z3) are within a half pound of each other (9.5 to 10 pounds, with the Z sitting at 9.81), and I always find myself wondering what we’d see if we had a LOT of data to pull reasonable averages from.

For all of my previous customs, I've worked with Dingwall (through my dealer) to try to select lighter samples in my chosen wood species. I'm not really weight conscious though, so, I didn't put a lot of pressure on that point.

I played my D-Bird at a show last week for the first time in a little bit. I can't wait til they make that bridge. I play about 80% with a pick in this band, and I hate those single rails on my right hand. I'm definitely going to buy one when they are available.

I'm using pickups 1/2 for fingerstyle, 1/3 for slap but I don't find any good configuration when using a pick...
