I know some of you have shared your experiences with pickup swaps but I'd like a clarification: I'm seeing FDVs described as having a "grind." To me, grind is like growl (think Warwick) but with more upper mid and pick attack. In comparison videos like the John Fox Bass comparison or Dingwall's, the FDVs sound like they aren't as mid forward as FD3s, which seems like the opposite of grind to me. FD3s sound downright nasally in some cases.

I'm asking because I wouldn't mind having a less mid-forward comparison in my Combustion compared to the stock FD3Ns. I'm considering the FDVs but the grind description is throwing me

I have three FDV pickups in my AB-I, though I usually solo the middle pickup. I play fingerstyle and have never heard anything that I would describe as 'grindy' or 'nasally' coming out of my rig... Three of my Dingwalls have pickups with AlNico V pickups. They're simply pleasing to my ears. My only five-string, a SJ-5 has super fatties that are also quite pleasing to my ears.

My SJ5XXX has fallen out of the rotation because I have found the original Thunderbird tone to be home for me. Bass with mid growl, I don't think any Dingwall PUPs get there for me. They were perfect for my Classic Country band which is when I commissioned it's build. Following the lead singer's death, I've gone back to my Hard Rock band, and the SJ5 is a bit too polite. SushiBox pedals help, but nothing else really sounds like a Thunderbird....

It’s finally new bass day! Given current waiting times 22.5 months isn’t bad. The combinations are perhaps a bit cliche but I feel in love with the D-Roc on Ian Allison’s T’bird/D-Roc comparison and placed an order shortly after seeing it.

The specs are stock ari gold D-Roc, save for the wenge neck, no face dots and no pickguard. I asked for dark uniform wenge so it could have a sleek monochrome look. I think they’ve done a brilliant job! I look forward to taking it for a proper spin!

Maybe putting a P-Tone would help.
Even though I can get a pretty aggressive tone of my Super J, the P-tone has a low mid punch that the FDVs somewhat lack.

I had understood that you should not put a P-tone in the middle position unless it was surrounded by P-tones (because of proximity of poles of opposite polarity)?

The top I chose for my build is actually not available via a mix up in communication. I was presented an alternate which is IMO a pretty big slide in the wrong direction. I peeped the Wood Room on the Dingwall site, and, the options are pretty skimpy right now.

So my ask, if folks can help out here and there... if/when you see really exceptional available Maple Burl tops, please @ me here or something? I want a really uniform and complex top, but, it needs to be all burl, no flame or curly-ness to it. I'll be trying to check nearly daily myself, but, with my schedule being what it is, that will frequently not be possible. This was the top I originally wanted, as an example:

Really nice burl pattern all throughout the top, with zero flaming or curly-ness about it. It was pretty much perfection!

Thanks! Looking at the site I saw redwood lace #1873 ( I think ). Me likey. What is the deal with fancy tops? You just have to wait and see what is available when they call your number?

No. When you slot a build you can lock in a top like. Usually goes good…

You have to be quick though. Dealers will scoop up multiples I think.

If you order a prima you get additional tops set aside off the website.

Did I see correctly that a Prima is ~ $17k? That's getting too close to "needs to have a transmission" territory for me, heh. I'm in the queue, but it seems like ever month that goes by the simple, passive ABV I had in mind gains a possible add on.

Yeah, until I’m acquiring a solid amount of other assets it’s definitely off the books for me. That’d pay a vaca property mortgage for a year!!!

Yeah, $17,999 specifically (USD). So really $18k, then taxes... in a lot of places that's a $20k bass at that point. I love my Prima Artist, no doubt. I play it very, very often (even live in bar shows - it and bloodmoon are my mains when I don't need a 6er). But I don't know that I can convince myself to shell out $18k+ for one at this point. Don't get me wrong, I want to. But that's... two highly spec'd Zs. Or a lot of mortgage. Or a really nice international vacation.

Yeah, all of this. And just to be clear, I'm not mad/upset or anything. Sometimes things happen and it's just what it is. Not worth getting in a huff over. Dealer was quick to try to help out, explained what happened, and I'm still happy to work with them. Actually, I'm GLAD it was found now, rather than a year from now, or whenever I need to fully lock my specs. One of the benefits of having longer build times is any kind of problem has a lot more time to be worked through, and as shown just a few replies up, everyone is interested in helping and making things go well.

Well, like, two hours later and a new top is already selected. Huge, huge thank you to my dealer (I'll be more open about this soon/later, promise!) and of course the folks (especially Ryan) over at Dingwall.
I'm just a nobody, and, for the dealer and Dingwall to not only get in front of this, but, bring such immediate resolution is just incredible, to me.

The new top is, I think, even better than my previous. I'll share a photo of it later today/tonight

There are no Dingwall customers more important than any other. You all enable us to do what we love everyday. We're incredibly grateful and honoured that you all choose to take your musical journey with us in your hands. There are no nobody's here, we're all just a part of this amazing community doing our very best to support eachother. I've been watching this thread for well over a decade, I know how awesome you all are. We've seen you all go to bat for us and do your best to educate people on why we do what we do. I guess what I'm trying to say is a big thank you for all the support over all these years. We appreciate you all so much. Have a great weekend!
