So only 1 year, 2 months after my initial order, Jason at FN emailed me that my custom is up for production. I figured I would have to wait until next year, so I'm pleasantly surprised. My final specs: Z 5 string, 3 SFII pickups, Neve pre, toggles, dual density body (northern ash and swamp ash), wenge neck and fingerboard, speedo markers with 12th fret "D", luminlay side dots, Ari Gold finish with matching headstock. This is my second Z (I stupidly sold the first one). My first Z had FD3 pickups with a Darkglass preamp. After watching the John Fox Youtube videos, I was very impressed with the Neve and the SFII, so I decided to give them a try. I thought about going with a roasted northern ash neck since Sheldon seems to have an affinity for it, but my last Z had a wenge neck and fingerboard, which I absolutely loved tonally and feel wise, so I figured why mess with a good thing. I also debated going with an x-top, but ultimately decided against it. I wanted a Macassar ebony top like my previous Z, but the two available pieces did not entice me. Also, the top and the contrast layers would have added about $1,600. Plus I just seem to bond with Dingwall's Ari Gold, so it won out. I was very fortunate to lock the old price in, since Dingwall has just raised their custom prices about 15%. Lastly, if anyone is looking for a nice AB, I just put the one in my avatar up for sale here on TB.

It did have the active buffer circuit and the VVTT passive electronics. Now, it sports an Audere Pre, pickup blend, a way to completely bypass the Pre, and a tone knob that works in active/passive modes. It is super flexible in the current configuration. It was set-up for F# too.
The price was great, when I was ready to say EFF IT & make a bad financial decision it had sold a day or two earlier.

Sounds like it did get a serious electronic overhaul.

Curious to see where it pops up next … if it does.

Yeah, that's a big reason I'm interested in it, I enjoy the passive tone on my kiesel JB (the other parts of the preamp not so much) and find myself never touching the low mids on the DGTC... Only the bass and high mids get much use, but the high mids on it gets overbearing very quickly.

So it'd be nice to have "fat" and "present" as the EQs instead, then the passive tone, like the Neve seems to be.

I’m working on a side-by-side comparison between my SP with alnico P-pickup and my SJ. Just need to finish filming some stuff :)

Thanks @alembicbones. I was sold on the Neve preamp after hearing it on the John Fox YouTube video. I never really bonded with the Darkglass tone capsule.
