I originally had it painted with the thinnest satin coat they could do, and didn't want it top-coated. I'm thinking it was labor intensive, and Sheldon called me and told me he wasn't happy with the sound and wanted to put a coat on it to tighten up the tone. I said fine as long as it wasn't a gloss finish. He said the top coat added nearly 1/2 lb of weight.

It’s a 2021 ABII, which was originally built for NAMM 2021 to show off Dingwall’s segmented fretlines for Dingwall’s fretless offerings. However, rather than going to the show, it instead had a new ovangkol neck built and was sent to the brilliant George Baldwin. Here it is in action being played far better than I could ever hope for:



Dingwall really helped me with this one, with Ryan (who I think frequents this forum) giving me the extra background, and Evan helping me find the strap I was looking for.

It joins an NG3 and D-Roc Custom but brings something else entirely to the table with its Glockenklang preamp and chambered walnut body.

Out of curiosity - do we have any Aussies still checking this thread that are also Super J owners?

Trying to find one to play is really difficult, and I'm curious to know how the J body feels in the sitting position.
Call me scarred after my recent D-Roc experience. Loved the tone, just couldn't get comfortable with it in a sitting position, and I'm a touch hesitant to commit to a J build without playing one...

SE Queensland area. But I do travel a bit for work, so other capital cities isn't a huge issue.

*waves* hey there fellow Aussie! And all good, I've played a Super P a while ago and have an SP1 on the shopping list. It's just the slight J body shape change. I don't actually think it'll be a problem really as I've played Jazz basses before, but given the outlay...I want to be sure.

Yeah, the Dingwall D (I have a D-Bird) is a bass that is meant to be played standing.

That being said, I play the D-Bird sitting down at home. I'm guessing the bass is close to a 45-degree angle when playing it in my armless computer chair (don't laugh! 😁). It works, and no, my sitting posture ain't the best. 😅

My SJ5 works well in the same chair. Eh...maybe a 25-degree angle. :cigar:

How's your SJ5 compare to the ABZ in your profile pic? Basically the same playing experience in the same chair? (so to speak)

I'm sure this has been discussed before but it's understandably difficult to search for...

How does the tone of a passive Super P compare to that of a passive Super J with a P-Tone neck pickup?

I feel fairly strongly about the P body/tone for my order, but the allure of the 3x configuration is haunting me.

I changed a Super J5 with super fatties to a PJ when the P pickup came out for the five string Supers. And I have a Super P4 with just a P pickup. I think the P placement in the J body was a little closer to the end of the neck than the Super P. Could I tell any difference with just the P pickup solo'd against the single pick up P? Not really. For that matter, I got pretty darn close to the P tone by wiring the Super fattie neck pickup to series. The P pickup was just a bit more bright.

I love the simplicity of the Super P. One pickup, volume and a hybrid tone control.

That said, I would love to have a bridge pickup and the rotary switch. I'd wire a super fattty 2 in series for the bridge, a traditional split P in series at the neck, and have the options to solo either plus the both in parallel (my favorite for most everything) and the two in series. (big, wide and loudest). That's where I ended up with the Super J 5.

I would not go so far as to route a pickup into the Super P4, I'd sell it as is first and look for a Super J body with a PJ or three pickup set up. Like the first Dingwall I ever bought, and sort of regret selling. They come and they go...

With my AB I 4 I hang with the the two pups wired to series and the switch as described above. Both in parallel is my sweet spot.

The Bird has the three pickup set up and I use the bridge quite a bit. Then the next position up. Everything else gets a little big and wide for my ears.

I prefer the J body style and J neck. And all the Dingwall I have are passive four strings. I didn't use the preamps in at the active ones I had. The fives and six string have also been moved on.
