Dingwall Owners Club

I got an email from Ryan at Dingwall about the p-tone/FDV issue. They are dead serious. He said that I might be fine now but I won't in the future and the p-tone will kill the middle FDV. o_O
As I want to keep the p-tone I will need 2 PUs to replace the FDVs. Are SFII's ok? And where do I get them?
SFIIs seem to be a popular choice. My dealer recommendation would be John Fox.

Pretty much locked my spec. Just need to figure out my finish.
Z3 5 string
Dual Density Swamp Ash
Maple Burl top (photo a page or so back)
Wenge neck
Macassar Ebony (asked for a dark and uniform cut, if they can)
Custom finish
Matching headstock
Matching wood inlays, speedO bar style
Blue Luminlay side dots
FDVs
Neve pre w/ toggles
Extender key on the low string

This bass will _likely_ live in A standard. Either that or Bloodmoon Z will, and this one will live in standard tuning. We'll see when I have both side by side.
Hey Ray,

That sounds like one killer build. I think it is cool you are taking the plunge on the Neve. I've always liked basses with a passive tone control in conjunction with an active preamp. While I don't see another custom Dingwall in my future, I could potentially see getting a JT5.

Best,
Bones

Still haven't heard back Dingwall tech, sent a follow-up today.....
I heard back from Dingwall tech, he said of FD3/Ptone/SFII or Ptone/Ptone/SFII "all of your pickup choices will work great together." Since they are all neo, I'm guessing alnico FDVs only work with FDVs.

But then he said "the Ptone is only effected negatively if placed in the middle position and then only if the surrounding pickups aren't Ptones as well." I find it confusing because that is contrary to what he said above.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube using p-tone and sf2x2.
Have a look at videoes by John Fox Bass.

You can also replace p-tone with fdv.

Here's a photo of the D-Bird Standard I just bought. I'm curious to know when these basses were produced, and how many were made before Dingwall changed the body shape to the D-Roc Standard?

View attachment 7078121
Iirc there was 200-400 made and I believe they were introduced in 2018

For Canadian models there was far less(20-30) and for 5 string Canadian models I think just a handful(under 10?)

I don’t know if actual numbers have ever been spoken about publicly. Please share if anyone knows!!!

Wouldn’t FD3s be fine as well? Being Neodinium?

Also, would getting a P tone alnico be a possibility and would it solve the issue or do they only do this in a split P shell?

I do watn a P-Tone. So it seems the other 2 FDVs will take a long vacation in a dark box stashed away.

I don't know :D

Was the P-Tone always neodymium?
I am wondering because I do have the p-tone / FDV combo for about 4 years now while Dingwall wrote about a degeneration in months.
It would be ironic if I invested time and money to have the pick-ups changed only to have the p-tone demagnetized by the SFII's.

I wonder why the SFIIs are the new stock option on the Z models instead of FDVs. Maybe to enable people to swap the neck one for a P-tone without having to change all 3 pickups in a Z3 model
The SF1s were the go to in the Z for a long time with Glockenklang.

Perhaps with the addition of the Neve and perhaps that it pairs very well with the SF2s is why they have transitioned back to the super fatty line in the Z series.

Yes. It was. Now believe you have the option since the inception of the production super.
I believe P-Tones (single shell) have always been neodymium
I believe this to be correct until recently. I believe @IvanBassist hasan Alnico split P pick up now?!?

Yes. The new standard split P pickup for the Super P is the alnico version. The old neodymium P-tone is still an option and it is the standard bridge pickup for the Super PJ according to the latest price list

I recently put the AlNiCo split P in my SP/J4 as well. Really happy with it.

I also swapped in a P-Tone in the bridge position in the SP/J4 over an FDV that came with the bass. I recall being rather pleased with that swap when I did it a few years ago.

So I have the current P/J configuration I guess. Sounds fantastic.

My SP4 still has the o/g split p/u. It’s a 2023 model so I believe it’s the Neo version. Not 100% sure though. There’s no shell marking to differentiate.
I was going to swap it out as well but it sounds so good as is, I lost my momentum on that idea.

Right. Im talking about the P-Tone in the single case. Not the split P. I dont think there is an alnico P-Tone that comes in the single size pickup shell unless Im mistaken?

Cool! So, the new alnico neck pickups blends well with the P-Tone in the bridge for both parallel and series settings?
