How is the payson bridge better then the solo rails?

I don't care for the rails because when playing with a pick I hit my hand against them and the edges. It's just a comfort thing for me.

For those of you who use Super J, what strings do you use a lot?
In my country I have to buy Dingwall medium scale strings directly from Canada and they are quite expensive.

So I'm looking for an alternative, is it possible to use regular scale strings?
If I use regular strings, will they feel different (tension, pitch, etc) compared to Dingwall strings?

I usually use pyramid nickel strings, DR lowriders and TIF jazz roundwounds.

My buddy uses Elixir for his 5 string SJ and he’s pretty happy with them, though

I alternate between Dingwall Medium nickels and Payson medium nickels on my SJ5.

FWIW, for a limited time, Payson is having a 20% sale on strings.

Dingwall nickels or stainless. I don’t like the stainless when they’re new but after a break in period, I like them. Tried the Dragonskins and they didn’t stay on the bass more than a few hours.

Another Dingwall long-scale nickel user here.

The good news, is that you can use a wider range of aftermarket strings on an SJ or SP, because of the slightly shorter scale. The bad news, is that the gauges won’t be optimized for fanned frets.

Buying singles in order to get exactly the right gauges, will probably be more expensive than importing Dingwall sets.

Payson are made overseas (to me as a Canadian, anyway), perhaps you can get a better deal on them? Payson has a long history with Dingwall, so you can be safe in the knowledge that they will fit.

Is there a specialty maker on your continent, that does custom lengths and gauges? I’ve bought oddball guitar and bass strings for special tunings from the UK before. I kind of got killed on shipping with those, but if you were to find a similar vendor closer to home, it might work for you.

I like that the dingwall strings on mine have certain ping to them which makes the B and E addictive

But I do wanna try NYXL from fret nation

I did ask sit if fusion wound will ever be fanned fret
Only power wounds and power steels

I do have the power steels on my new kiesel Brian Bromberg 40-100-120
And they are very bright but not like low riders

They sound more edgy in the upper mids

Was hoping for some basic color options like white/black, but understand that they may not want to outsource it. If it sticks with black limba as the body, would be nice if they offered a natural clear transparent in addition to the current burst. I personally am not a fan of burst finishes on non figured tops but realize I’m probably in the minority.

I think they'll limit the options and point you to the custom shop for much of a variation. They have to keep it streamlined to keep the cost down.

Makes sense for most options. I’d hope they’d at least consider the pure natural finish as opposed to the burst as it’s even less work that needs to be done by the outside shop.

Offering only a single finish allows Dingwall to bring the highest quality at the most reasonable cost. Look in other product lines for more options...
