I had one briefly and used it with my Afterburner. I had issues with dropouts with mine and it depends on your WiFi environment. If you get one, make sure you try it out before the return period is up.

Right, I get the point of the fast lane models, the point I was trying to make is it may be to narrow in scope to be successful. Standardizing all of the specs outside of finish color makes a lot of sense for providing max quality and optimizing cost. And the current fast lane has a great spec list. However, look at all of Dingwall’s non custom shop lines. Outside of artist signatures, every model has multiple finishes available with all other specs being the same.Offering only a single finish allows Dingwall to bring the highest quality at the most reasonable cost.Look in other product lines for more options...
Instead of launching the fast lane as a single model, it might be more successful if it is launched as a “Canada production model”, where it has a standard set of features outside of color. And then maybe it has 2-3 core colors that are always available and 1-2 limited edition colors that change year to year. This would still allow for 95% of the manufacturing process to be identical while giving a broader range of options to the customer.
But your non-burst will be someone else's maple fingerboard or another's gold hardware. I can see why the would limit it at launch. As time goes on they are likely to add limited runs of different colors.

From what I recall from chatting with Sheldon earlier this year, the finishing process is a big reason for the delay in the custom shop line. If people requested a regular a burst finish for the basses, it'd be a lot quicker, for instance.
Right, but those are things you cannot normally customize on production basses from other companies. Usually finish is the only choice you get.
Also does anyone know if it’s possible to get longer pickup screws? Trying to set my pickup height on my ABZ 4 to the factory spec and if I set them to the recommend height, there is a significant amount of pickup wiggle, which is a bit annoying as I usually anchor my fingers on the pickups.

Should be locked in fully now (as in, final spec confirmed with Dingwall, and they sent the final build sheet back). Soooo I should have my new Z in, I dunno, 2 to 4 months or so!

Adding paint adds production time and cost. That goes against the point of this model I think.
That said, it’ll be pretty east to add after if you know a good painter.

I didn't go with Chad and Jeff. Don't get me wrong here at all, they're wonderful folks through and through. I'm glad I've done my orders through them that I have.
This time though, I've gone with John Fox Bass. There was a good bit of calculus that went into that decision, and honestly, each step of things for this has proven that for me and for this particular order, I made the best choice. John has stuck with me, explained a lot of things very thoroughly, is in constant contact with every update along the way, and helps navigate some unique challenges I posed very very well. He's also just plain a joy to talk to and has enough order experiences with Dingwall to really fine tune things and make it a smooth process.
So, I definitely recommend folks strongly consider JFB for orders.
On a tangent topic here (none of this below is a negative reflection on JFB in the least - in fact, JFB went way, way above and beyond in going to bat for me, helping me navigate a lot of this, and being a voice of calm and reason when we would get updates):
I also got wind that there's some changes to the order process, and seeing the price hike for 2024 (since I deposited way before the price hike, I got in on 2023 pricing), things are spicy for Dingwall Canadian orders now.
I do feel a little weird with some of the imposed changes... a smaller one, but an example of them, is that changing from the "standard" 3x rotary to a "DRoc" rotary on a Z3 slaps you with a $70 USD upcharge! That makes no sense to me as the customer. I can't imagine the switch itself being that much more expensive for Dingwall, and likewise I can't imagine how it changes the build time or workflow enough to have such an upcharge on it. I don't ever expect (or would even ask) Dingwall to justify themselves to me, but, that one really a shocker and even though it was only $70 (in the grand scheme of a many thousands bass, not meaningful), it stood out as... really out of place.
There's other options that now come baked-in with somewhat hidden upcharges too, particularly around finishes - I think a lot of folks won't hit them as they're opting for more cheaper or paint instead of stain finishes, but if you do end up hitting them, your cost for finish is significantly higher now (ex: my inlays are $850+ by themselves now. On bloodmoonZ, which has more complex inlays, they were $525, in late 2021).
Even for me, I think that if I wanted to go through the process again, I 1) can't afford to now with the nickle and diming, and price inccreases 2) don't enjoy the reduced options available, and 3) generally don't feel as good through the process. That last one will change once I have it in my hands of course, Dingwall's end products never disappoint at all. I know they're basically in "production hell" where the backlog is deep and growing, but I feel like the customer is the one taking the brunt / being punished of that with long waits and price increases, plus odd upcharges for not sticking strictly to the default options.
That all reads pretty critically, and I'm really hesitant to submit it on a public forum, to be honest. Some of it is still settling in, so it's still fresh/raw and a sensitive thing for me. I may be over reacting to it. At the same time, I also feel pretty strongly that things like the rotary up-charge are just odd and is worth some public knowledge on. I don't want to just be here throwing mud at them though - Sheldon and crew obviously know how to run their business, and who am I to sit here and try to tell them they're wrong.

Tones for day and amazing neck but 4.6kg / 10,2lbs does not work for me...Now I got the bug and might make a move as I really want to have a first Dingwall experience.
I'm hearing about further increase on Canadian model, is there a price list available somewhere or I have to go through a dealer?

Heh. Email John Fox Bass. I know for sure he has the 2024 list (we were just talking about it not long ago) and can likely get it to you. He won't pressure you into any order or anything
It may read critically but it all makes sense.
What I will add to this is that cost of living is getting nuts up here. Costs of doing business obviously too.
They are most likely going over and over books and procedures in ways to make every step and build justifiable. I hope Sheldon is making “dreams come true” profit on his contributions to the bass community but I have a feeling he is stressing about proposed future tariffs and existing regular costs and compounding abusive taxes.
I hope you love that new build when it comes to fruition!!!

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the whole point of the fast lane was that the bass was assembled in the dingwall factory, but sent to other local shops to have the finish applied as the dingwall paint booth is the limiting factor in the process. Did I miss something there? That’s why I was suggesting adding additional finishes, as I thought it wouldn’t affect the dingwall factory side of things at all.
