It made sense to me to have a pick guard for both orientations. I know you've been havin' some fun, bro! I just had to tromp off to my brother and sister in-laws' abode for a magnificent feast and some shoe-skating over the frozen pond. :cool: I brought the Sonic P along to show her. She's a mere geetar player but is a fan of blue basses as well as an excellent and highly creative cook.

Home again and ready to rock the P some more, I garontee...:bassist:

I purchased a black abalone pick guard blank from WD and planned to send it to JohnK in order to clone the w/b/w guard. After peeking under the guard and verifying that everything is ready to go for the 'reverse' pickup orientation, I'm going to ask him carve the abalone guard that way.

Good morning, pmad. :) Yes, I ordered a "black abalone" blank from WD. Brother JohnK has done a couple of superb custom guards for me in the past and will be 'doing the honors' for this one. I learned how good sonic blue and abalone compliment each other after ordering one of WD's pre-cut guards for this nice 60's CV Squier (which fit quite well):

While spec'ing this bass, I asked Barry Lamb about sending my blank to the Dingwall shop and letting them cut and fit it, but at the time, he was hesitant about interrupting the smooth flow of work there. SO, I spec'd this one with a stock w/b/w guard, intending it to serve as a pattern for fashioning the guard that I desired from the get-go. The plan is unfolding well because I'm suspecting that I will like the reverse pickup orientation on this bass even better than the 'classic'. Either way, I'll end up with a guard for both...:)
Continuing observations: Setup-wise the neck and strings were right on. The pickup height as set at the shop emphasized the E and A strings a bit too much for my taste. One full turn (of the adjustment wrench) lower for that pickup segment 'did it' for me. :cool:

Very cool. Nice looking combination. Besides the custom color of the PG, the ability to alternate standard/reverse pickup orientation is a nice option.

Agreed!

Here's a question regarding fanned frets . Do any of you guys use a wide up/down, guitar style vibrato when you play? If so, is there anything whacky with the fanned frets? Seriously getting ready to put a deposit down on a Super P...need someone to give me a reason not to!!!

Also, what are the tonal differences between a 'normal' P config and the reverse config?

Hey Duke! Go for it! No issues with vibrato, glissando, or any other 'do'. At that point, a fret is a fret. Just more ergonomic (for me) with the fanned fret design.

No info on the reverse P config. I have a Super P and a Super P/J. Both of which sound fantastic (in standard config.). Wouldn't change anything at this point! Just enjoying every moment I get to play these!

I asked the same thing a few days ago. Grand Wazoo pointed me to his review. Apparently the difference is much bigger than expected.

I don't really do vibrato but have no problems bending notes.

The last bass I had a reverse P on was a five string Kinal. It's been a few years since I played that Kinal and I never heard the P pickup in the 'classic' orientation. It will be interesting to hear the difference on the new four string Super P and 'see' if it is as pronounced as what GW and Dave were hearing with their five-strings. :cool:

Smoother balance between upper and lower strings with the D and G being mellower and more in natural balance for tonality.

Go back and page and find the posts of the member who just bought a Super-P with the reverse setup and read his take on it where he's also thanking the member who strongly suggested the reverse setup.

The only 'reason' not to would be visual appearance, which to many of us 'looks' more natural.

Just got in from rehearsal. And a strange one in the best possible sense.

Was informed that we would have no drummer and therefore doing an acoustic set ie two guitars, me, and congas.

I ran DukeoRock down trying to decide if I should take a chance and run the upright. Bottom line, my timing stank so bad that I had a very difficult time trying to play and hold my nose due to the overbearing stench of my horrid timing.

No big deal. I would take the Super P5 for a spin. Roll off some highs. Also practiced smoothing my attack on the pluck. I wasn't trying to sound like an acoustic so much as be smooth and subtle.

We also sat up on the floor in front of the stage. Killed all the monitors as FoH acted as monitors.

First off, the low mids on this this thing are flat unbelievable. We have a great PA (Multiple Mackie powered cabs) The PA has so much bottom that we actually disconnected all 6 of the subs. In spite of this, the Super P was still massive. Big, fat, deep, and clear. Gave me chicken skin. Anyone that thinks that the reverse P would somehow make tone Stingrayish, can cross that one off their list.

The nickels are smooth sounding. I was doing some slide stuff and our lead guitarist asked me if I was playing a fretless. This cracked me up as I had been talking with Mark and told him that the resonance on the Super P unplugged and some MUAH going.

Since we were doing an acoustic set, our WL asked me to simplify bass lines to leave lots of space. That allowed the Taylors to drive dynamics with their rhythms. This was a great opportunity to hear big ringing notes on the Super P.
I have decided that I need a monitor system the size of the PA. The Super P was EVEREWHERE!

To say I'm in love is an understatement. This bass compliments a Super J so much better than the yin/yang of traditional J's and P's.

Out of respect to this groups brutal honesty, I had to make one minor adjustment. For some unknown reason, I found myself rotating my hand and playing way too close to the bridge on the D and G. I made a slight technique change to ensure that I moved my plucking hand slightly forward when on either of the strings. Instant even tone. This had nothing to do with the bass, other than there is a slight ergonomic difference from the body contour and shape of the Super J. Not an issue and it's an adjustment you make and then forget about. I thought it worthy of mention in the event that someone else runs in to it.

I was really afraid that I would have the overwhelming desire to kick the Super J to the curb upon arrival of the Super P. After playing the Super P tonight, I can't really see either bass taking the place of the other. Both creating vastly different killer tones. I guess everyone will just have to call me Two Gun Johnny.

Sunday is going to be really, really good. The arrangements are fantastic and the Super P is perfect for the job.

I reiterate my earlier comment. If you're a P Bass guy or girl, you have got to get one of these. And if you're a P bass hater, you need to play one of these.

Good for you for even trying! My uncle who 'taught me how to walk' on his '63 P can really make the old doghouse talk. I tried one of his uprights years ago and from that limited experience developed a healthy respect for upright players! I'm sticking with my planks and frets... ;)

Knowing Zoomie, he's probably just being too hard on himself...betcha he's better than he's letting on. Zoomies old Kay upright belonged to me once upon a time. That bass has sweet history for me. Made quite a few records on it...played it on television for the Dove Awards tribute to Rich Mullins in 1998. I was Rich's bass player in the 90's. That bass is beat to heck, but it earned every scar it has...probably played 1,500 shows on that bass :)
