Good morning, pmad.

Yes, I ordered a "black abalone" blank from WD. Brother JohnK has done a couple of superb custom guards for me in the past and will be 'doing the honors' for this one. I learned how good sonic blue and abalone compliment each other after ordering one of WD's pre-cut guards for this nice 60's CV Squier (which fit quite well):
While spec'ing this bass, I asked Barry Lamb about sending my blank to the Dingwall shop and letting them cut and fit it, but at the time, he was hesitant about interrupting the smooth flow of work there. SO, I spec'd this one with a stock w/b/w guard, intending it to serve as a pattern for fashioning the guard that I desired from the get-go. The plan is unfolding well because I'm suspecting that I will like the reverse pickup orientation on this bass even better than the 'classic'. Either way, I'll end up with a guard for both...
Continuing observations: Setup-wise the neck and strings were right on. The pickup height as set at the shop emphasized the E and A strings a bit too much for my taste. One full turn (of the adjustment wrench) lower for that pickup segment 'did it' for me.
