Dingwall Owners Club

Just the Supers. You have a lot more options since they only go up to 35" on the B, but you still have to be careful, and I guess it is important to match the Dingwall gauges (which I did with this set, but didn't with the flats as there were limited options).
Fretnation has super long scale pressurewounds custom made for them by GHS.

I threw a pair on a NG like 6 months ago hoping they'd be like bass boomers (they're not). I really hated them at first but went away for a month shortly thereafter. When i got back i loved them and they're still on that bass (go figure!).

It's getting to the point Ill probably swap then out soon though. I have another set but I'm thinking about trying the Dunlops next on the NG & swap out dingwall nickels for steels on the Z. Lots of string options these days.

Which gauges did you use? Even though I’m pretty happy with DW strings, I’d like to give those a try

Good to hear from others that there are options for long scale, though I am not ever going to do that on my ABs. I did cross check Fretnation for fitment, but was limited to what was easily available in Australia for economic reasons.

I got these ones:

I usually like the GHS Pressurewounds on basses, so these were my first string of choice when the time came. However I did not like them at all on the Dingwall for some reason, they seemed to be much higher tension than when fitted on other basses.

So I'm sticking with the Dingwall nickels, as they (perhaps unsurprisingly) have perfect tension and feel on the basses.

After UPS fiasco and the bass going back to Cali, Jason at Fret Nation (who was awesome throughout) got it out to arrive on Sat AM overnight. Even UPS could not mess that up thankfully! It arrived hours ago. It is spectacular. Pics don’t do it justice. I’ll take some good ones outside in sun when we get a nicer day.

It is hard to let a custom made for you bass go. I have the SJ5XXX, CS NOS shell pink '59 P, and a Warmoth/Musikraft Fenderbird all with my specs.
I'd gig the 4 & keep the 5 to play at home at least until you get rid of all the other basses or your physically unable to. That thing deserves to be played and not be wall art.

Life is short!! We’ve got some exploring to do!!! 😁
I'm all over any one of your purple/ish ones if you do decide to downsize...and I have been thinking about getting a 6...just saying

This is it, the last Luminlay post, I promise!

I replaced the 3mm pearloid dots on the face of the fretboard with 3mm blue Luminlay. Same dots I put in the side. Turned out nice.

With the frets polished, neck sanded and fretboard clean and oiled, she’s set up perfectly with TI jazz rounds. Bridge pup is wired to series, as is the neck pickup. Standard passive tone circuit and four way selector. It goes from burpy and bark bridge to P with a couple cool stops between.

I’m smitten all over again.

I marked this as my favorite on Reverb. Thank you for buying it as I do not need another Dingwall..🤣 gold against wenge chocolate and black is an exquisite combo. Same as my new Z3.

I’m glad my irresponsible purchase saved you from making one!!! 😂😂😂

@prom311, my thoughts exactly. For now I have to put the time in to be able to ignore the B string. If no SJ4XXX or extraordinary SJ4 or SPJ4 comes my way, I may eventually string it E-C.

I did this with all my five strings. E-C was way more fun.

You can buy single C strings from FretNation. That’s how I started the experiment. I just shifted the existing strings over one slot and put the C on. (The G just barely made it, you might need a single G.)

You probably have enough extra used strings hanging around to put together a set.

I was concerned that the nut would be an issue since the slots are oversized. Turns out it wasn’t. As long as the open strings don’t rattle, and the slots aren’t cut too low. If I did have a rattle or low string, I’d slide a bit of shrink tubing or something under the string and settle it in the slot.

I ordered a few C string in different gauges .030 to .035. They run about $5 each.

Since I never messed with the nut, it could go back to B-G, no problem.

Once I set up the bass, I wondered why I hadn’t done it years earlier. I never really bonded with the low B. E flat was as low as most bands needed, and they were all tuned down a half step.

Super fun noodling around with the higher range and having nice clear sounding cords. With a looper and drum machine, some fuzz or filters….

I even tried an octave up pedal, but it just wasn’t real sounding. At that point the guitar is better.

Have fun!

You're right, plenty of strings around, especially helped by Jason at Fretnation throwing 5 Cs into a string order for me. Maybe at the end of my playing time I'll string my last 2 5s E-C. Still a little way to go...

Another fine specimen of playable art from Sheldon! Enjoy it thoroughly, brother. I think that it will give you the proverbial 'Digwall smile" every time you pick it up.
