Any fellow Dingwall owners with a 4 string Super J anywhere in LA?

I'm switching up my custom build a bit, and I'd love to directly compare the neck of someone's J to my P to help decide which one to go with :D

Good know Sheldon, just measured and they're right at 1/8" or a hair lower; always good to know I can trust my ears.

Here's that tune I mentioned, the bass tone is a single track of the Super P/FD3 in parallel mode through my Aguilar, Darkglass and Tech21 pedal board into a Demeter DI straight to the board...I clamped a GoPro to the head stock during the take, hopefully I'll have the audio synced to video soon :D

Sounds great! Nice production, I love the double pre-chorus at the end.

Acoustic set at church today. Played the Super P. No drum kit. Just djembe and guitars. Had to turn down the volume by about 60%! Many positive comments on the bass. Lots of opportunities to vary the sound using the Tone Fusion knob. Amazed at the variety found in this instrument.

It should be going fretless in a few weeks. But I think I'll keep the fretted neck, because it is so good.

Actually, talked to Barry last week (decided to change back to chrome hardware) and he said he saw them working on my neck and I'm still on track for Late September/October.

Ordered mine December 2nd and was due late July to August. Was asked If I wanted to go with maple to get it going. Decided to keep my original specs. Maybe yours did get bumped up on the account of the bad wenge.

I added black hardware to my order and that was originally going to set it back a couple weeks. I told them I'll wait it out. Unless of course another batch of bad wenge comes in, then I might change the order up. We'll see.

I thought about the wenge neck, but I'm trying to stay as close to the recipe for my PZ5 as possible, just with the extra pickup. I'm going with a maple and black blocked board/neck and realized that if I'm going to go with that kind of a vintage look for the neck it makes sense to go with the more vintage looking hardware.

That's understandable. I just wanted the sound of wenge on the classic p shape. Also I love the feel and the open grain pattern.

If another shipment gets scrapped I'll probably go with maple on maple with white pearl blocks and pg.

During half time of one of the World Cup matches i was watching, I whipped up a PVC tube for soaking strings. I had everything I needed out in my garage/shop/kitchen except my PVC cement had dried out. Even with a quick trip to the hardware store, I still got to see the second half.

I dropped the Payson reduced core that I had had on for months in the tube with denatured alcohol, and installed the new Dingwall nickel rounds.

Today I pulled the Paysons out, dropped the Dingwalls in, and changed my strings: 15 minutes with a wipe down on the bass included. Works great, and the Paysons sound like they are brand new. Sweet!

Hey all, just a few questions -

For those people who have either an ABZ or afterburner with the 3 FD3 pickups (P tone in neck), can you get the bass to sound exactly at a jazz bass? What would the sound difference be between:
- Maple neck / Wenge Fingerboard
- Maple neck / Maple Fingerboard
- Wenge neck / Maple Fingerboard
- Wenge neck / Wenge fingerboard

Basically i am trying to get a bass that covers, P and J basses and Musicman and just want to figure out the right combination.

The Dingwall will never sound EXACTLY like any Leo Fender creation, but you have a better chance of getting in that ballpark with an all-maple neck (which Leo used often).

Julian, we're gonna have to "agree to disagree" on the effect that wood has on tone.
I'm not saying that wood outweighs strings or pickups in the overall tone, but all else being equal, many people can clearly hear a difference in a bass with a maple fretboard from the same bass with a rosewood fretboard.
Same thing with body woods -- the cellular structures and oil content are different, which affects how the waves propagate through the medium.
That's basic physics.

It may not be an observable difference to everyone once the whole band has kicked in, but it's an ingredient in the "soup".
