I also found the biggest change with a Z3, was getting used to having a B string again. I hadn't owned a 5 string in about 3 years and just needed to get used to that, more than the extra length. I think one of the reasons they make sense, is that the G is still 34", so you're moving your hand the same distance up and down the neck. It's only your fingers that stretch a little further.

As Greg points out, Sheldon's LS fanned-fret basses have a Fender-scale G-string, so they don't feel as long as they measure. Plus, the long upper horn and clever strap button positioning ensure that the reach is actually shorter than basses with SG, Thunderbird or Alembic-style bodies.

I was thinking about this the other day, and maybe this perspective might help:

I have a conventional, 34" parallel-fret P-bass 5-string. I modded it with a rear Straplok and lightweight tuners to make it hang like my ABZ. The weight is comparable, the neck shape is comfortable and the action is set very low, yet I always reach for the Dingwall when I have a fast, technical passage to play.

In my hands at least, the P-bass feels a bit like pulling on a well-worn pair of hiking boots. Comfortable and familiar, but slower than the ABZ and a little clumsy.

That's because Nickelback is just FULL-ON ludicrous.
To me, as a lifelong metal-fan, they represent everything that is WRONG with hard/heavy music today.

They get tons of airplay/popular acclaim while bands like Neurosis are all but ignored.

That's because they're businessmen and not artists.

They have a very successful formula as to the type song structures and melodies that allow them to move a lot of units and rarely deviate from it; there's a reason you can find YouTube videos of people altering the tempos and key centers of their tunes and playing them on top of each other.

You have to admire their business acumen, but they're essentially the opposite of inspired.

Glad you are liking your new Super J. You can find our strings at our distributor in Tokyo Sleek Elite. If they don't sell direct, they will know who might have them in stock. Our new strings are the best we've tested, DR lowriders are the best next choice.

The Z3 in the photo should have a countersunk strap pin on the back. When you're testing it out, try both strap positions. It makes a significant difference in the feel of the long scale basses.

I personally love both Lo-Riders (SS and Nickel) as well as Hi-Beams and Fatbeams on my Super PFD3

The recessed strap pin is a killer addition to the long scale basses; it allows them to sit on your body exactly the same standing as they do sitting, which was previously my only complaint about my Combustion

My first Dingwall, bought from fellow TBer BassPirate this April. It seems to be one of the first Super J's made (batteries for the aguilar OBP-1 preamp underneath the pick guard, there's an active / passive switch on the control plate, no string guide on the headstock, etc), but it's already my "most favorite" bass ever, if that makes any sense.

I just put all of my other bass guitars up for sale today (2 Lull's, 1 G&L, and a fretless PJ). They are all very fine instruments, very light too. But I have an almost religious experience every day, even if only playing 5 minutes a day after work. I definitely notice the evenness in string tension across the strings, among all of the other benefits that are often cited.

Welcome to the club that needs no numbers. Your Super J is absolutely gorgeous! I ogled it thoroughly when BassPirate offered it up for sale. I love all the pastel colors. I've never owned a seafoam green bass, but have admired the beauty of all that I have seen. You reactions (DAS and selling perfectly good mono-scaled instruments) are similar to other players who have found all that they have been looking for in a Dingwall bass. The 'medium-scale' Super series work better for me than any other instrument I have played. I definitely had a religious experience with my "Stormy Monday" SJ/P-5 just this morning.

Last I heard they were sold out of Combustions until the next round is delivered sometime in October, but they still have green, blue and black NG-2's available, though I'm unsure if they're shipping with Darkglass pre amp yet.

Also, rumor has it 4 string Combustions will be available in early 2015

I really like the song, very catchy..put me in a better mood than what I was earlier tonight. It definitely had groove, but the lyrics stuck out to me. Somewhat simple, but had depth at the same time. Good stuff

The next set of strings I'm going to try on my Super J/P4 is Low Riders. Did quite a few gigs with Fat Beams and thought they were pretty good. Just for grins I put Hi Beams on and don't like them at all...they seem scooped and the top end is pretty clacky to me. Still want to try running flats on this bass at some point

I liked the nickel Lowriders on the Super PJ. My favorite set for the Super PJ 4 was DR Hellborgs. They are nickel rounds, supposed to emphasize the fundamental, and easy on the wallet. The out wrap is a single wire, smooth, but a bit bumpier than the fine wire wound lowriders. I'd use them on the fiver, but they don't make a B string for that set.

Currently, I'm on a TI jazz flat kick, and they work really well on the Super PJ four. Pricey at first blush, but mine have been on there for years. To me, that make them a very inexpensive string for what I'm getting out of the deal.

6 months for me...fortunately the Super P/FD you sold me is allowing me to keep my sanity (it's pretty easily my #1 at the moment) but it also has me thinking about dramatically changing up my build, as what I have now is essentially exactly what I ordered (aside from the fingerboard wood and the finish) and I'd had to have one of these amazing basses play second fiddle to the other

I was just watching a vid on youtube of when I had the bass. Glad you are enjoying it. I wish my 5er would hurry up and get here before I do something stupid like pick up another SP4 and have it routed like you did

It took a LONG time to get the parts in, but it was really worth the wait; there's not a sound I can't get out of that bass now, both aesthetically and sonically it's perfect for everything from laid back vintage vibes to crushing modern metal

If I ordered, I would have to stay away from eBay and TB. Each time a "used" bass popped up for sale, I would regret having to pass because I have a new one coming in 5 more months.

I'm just not that disciplined.

You're all lightweights. Sheldon's turn around time is pretty nice these days. I ordered my V/Z in 2005 and it was about 2 weeks away from the 3-year mark when I got it in 2008.
