Congrats on the new PJ5! I assume that's a Super J with a P in the neck position? I like the P body and pickup position, so I'm going to have a J FD3 put in the bridge position.

So, nobody knows of a source for block inlay stickers that will work on a Super P 5? It's not something I need, but I think it would be fun.

I ordered mine passive with the Tone Fusion control as well as the additional series/parallel pickup switches...I'll be happy to post some sound clips once it arrives late fall :D

So I have serious Dingwall GAS.

I love the sh!t out of my AB1. It is amazing, and has changed my playing and sound for the better. It covers so much of what I want. That said, as much as I dont like playing my music man basses, I still love the honk that the humbucker in the sweet spot gives. Add in the fact that I want another bass, possibly active to balance out the passive AB1, and I am left with a few questions.

Who here has experience with the SPJ5? I know the pick up spacing is a bit tighter than the SJP, but that may work for what I want tonally. Has there ever been a reverse SPJ5? How would the SPJ stack up against the NG-2 or the SJxxx? The NG-2 is the more attainable option, and probably what I will end up with down the line. I have heard mutterings that the old combustion necks are chunkier than my AB1 (not that it is a huge deal, I came from a MM), but I want the quality to be in the same ball park as my AB1.

I am right with you there. My AB1 has really changed me as a bass player. My bandmates absolutely love my new sound. I've platooned a lot of basses through this band, but the AB1 is the one they really noticed a difference in my tone and my dynamics.

I want another Dingwall, I just don't know which one. I'm either going to go to bone stock Z3 or a loaded Super J5. Just don't know.

MDBass has a Super PJ4 (Precision with added J), with two pickguards and the rout so he can switch trad/reverse P. He is over the moon happy with it, and prefers the reverse.
I have a Super P5, and will soon be adding the J (as well as the rout/PG for reversibility). I can't wait. This is an amazing bass and really versatile already.
It is a wonderful fusion of old and new. Focused but round, sounds like P but can edge into Marcus territory, passive yet can sound almost active, etc.
For the record, I've never tried any of the high-end Dingwalls, but I have played a Combustion or two, and the SP5 is another world of playability and tone. With flatwounds on it I can go from 40's upright sounds all the way to modern pop, and that's without the bridge pickup.

Highly recommended! I'll post my review after I get the J added too, if it's in time and might help you.

I recently needed to venture into the world of 5 string basses to make my life easier for some of the new songs we are playing in our band. I picked up a new Lakland DJ5 and am enjoying it although not used to a passive bass so I added a Tone Hammer to my pedal board and then I ran across the N2 Combustion in Ferrari Yellow. Have to have one I had a 4 string ABZ but again really wasn't crazy about the tone so I sold her. Loved the light weight and the fanned frets. Well I put a deposit down on an N2 in yellow with Bass SanDiego it is due in November, can't wait!!!!

...which leads me to a question. Anyone out there with any of the SP5 or SJ5 variants try out T. I. Flats? My understanding is that the B string is .135 and requires filing the nut slot. My desire if to use Rounds on the SJ5 (some zing) and do Flats on the SPJ5 (no zing, just thump and and maybe a little growl.
