My sunburst PJ5 will hopefully be nearing completion soon. I decided to switch my order to black hardware today, and added Luminlay side dots while I was at it.

Yes -- took the batteries out of the bass to ensure that there was no buffering happening.

I need to try that! Makes sense, but I kinda assumed that the active (Aguilar) onboard preamp would take care of the buffering.

It just bugs me because the GK's have taken on all challengers when tried in-store, but the results are different with my Dingwall.

So far I've kept the GK because it slots itself so well into a band mix.

But the Dingwall isn't going ANYWHERE.

Hmm... I have a HPF-3 in my signal chain 99% of the time. You might need to come try it out.

I'm not a current club member but I'm hoping to join in November when the next round of V4 Combustions get shipped. I've been in contact with Barry for a couple weeks now and I'm on the fence about which color to go with.

From the pictures I've seen, it almost appears to be a metallic orange. Is this true or is it just camera magic?

If I am not mistaken, the candy colours have a silver or gold undercoat, so it would make sense that they have a metallic look to them.

Silver undercoat is brighter and more boldly orangey (can be reddish-orange), Gold undercoat is warmer mellow-yellow orangey. I like both and can never decide which undercoat to go with my Oarawnnnjjjje.

I've never had the luxury of seeing a Candy-Orange Dingwall (COD) in person, so I wouldn't hazard a guess as to which undercoat is used because so much change can occur to the hue between photography lighting and a computer monitor's colour balance.

Check out some hotrod paint jobs/paint suppliers – wealth of info on paint and how to achieve certain visual effects that can be applied to cars and bass guitars alike: ex. metal-flake comes in different sizes and the bigger the flake the more difficult it is to spray. There's Colour changing paint, temperature sensitive paint, super flat, tactile suede-feel paint (difficult to clean greasy fingerprints off!), Chrome/gold/bronze/brass look, prism rainbow effects...

First COD I saw was a Lee Sklar model on the Dingwall website and instantly fell in love with the colour!

Oh, and there I am again, insinuating myself into the situation with a silver-to-gold undercoat burst with Candy Tangerine on top. Maybe Red Strings and you've got a nice Blood Orange for the Pass Nacht Festival. Reminds me, "burnt orange" has been a favourite of mine since I was 7, 40 years. Candy copper can look very orangey.

King Double Bass (now Blast Cult, and in Orange, Ca no less) did/does some cool transparent candy orange finishes where you can still see the wood grain beneath the candy orange metal-flake. I think it's achieved by laying down the transparent orange stain first and putting the flake into the clear coat, but I'm not sure.

Here's a link to a cool ASAT refinished in orange. The owner starts with a silver undercoat, followed by some yellow tint, but it takes a turn for greeny-gold but manages to save it in the end and get the desired candy orange. All I know is there's no such thing as "candy apple orange". Ever seen an orange apple? Neither have I. Green Granny Smiths, Delicious Red, McIntosh Red, yellowish Money Apples I picked myself, pinkish crabapples from my mom's tree... but never orangish apples. To reiterate, it's not "candy apple orange", rather just "candy orange" – Thank you.

A Candy Apple Red Fender is lovely, but a Candy Orange Dingwall is Morange better!

About to pull the pin on my Dingwall. What would people say is the difference in tone between the ash and alder bodies? Is it worth the upcharge for a maple fretboard over the standard Wenge?

With all my other basses (and even the Ibanez Mikro that I bought my daughter), the GK sounds fantastic.

And every time I've done an A/B demo of an amp vs. a GK RB-Series, the GK has been the sound I preferred--so I'm certainly not knocking the amp.

I'm just struggling to figure out the gremlin that is not allowing favorite bass + favorite amp to = a sound that I like.

I've got a 1001 rb 2. I use a MXR m-80 di + at all times. The GK is a work horse, no doubt, but the eq section needs some help. I've also bypassed the front end with various pre's like the Alembic F2B.

Same complaints you have, cold, brittle, kind of sterile, especially at lower volumes. Let the big dog off it's leash and it can tons of fun, but the thing is stupid loud by the time the fun starts. It's a huge amp.

Since I got a deal on a GB streamliner 600, the GK has been on extended hiatus. If I need to get really loud, not that I want too, I still think I'd use the GB to pre the GK.

Well, my deal is that those complaints ONLY apply to when I'm playing my Dingwall through it.
Otherwise I'm totally happy with the GK's EQ; I run contour between off and 9 o'clock & presence in the 9 o'clock to noon range (depending on cab), and then my treble and high mids around 10-11 o'clock, and low mids and lows at 1 o'clock. Boost is usually at noon and woofer amp is my master volume.

When I play my P-Bass with a passive DiMarzio "Will Power" pickup (VERY high impedance) it sounds thick and thumpy and great. When I play my active EMG PJ (low impedance) with 1-piece maple body and ebony fretboard (a very BRIGHT bass) the highs are sweet and precise.

Electronically, the Dingwall is between those two extremes, but seems more adversely affected than either.
Into my Peavey heads ($90 and $75, respectively) the Dingwall sounds awesome, and the other basses sound just like they do through the GK.

So, I'm kinda stumped, but I need to try the suggestion I got yesterday and put a pedal in the middle of the signal chain to see if another stage of buffering will help.
