Dingwall Owners Club

Over the weekend I was going through one of my backup drives and casting about for some of the Dingwall stuff I've either archived or grabbed along the way, as well as my build pictures, and some non-Dingwall bass related stuff. Some of the very first of Sheldon's work, and of course some of the basses I found inspirational art along the way. I'm gonna sort of post these here and there in the next few days. Also, I'm going to ask YOU to post your inspirational Dingwall choices...with the caveat that they can't be basses that YOU own. ;)

To start that off, here's the beginning of the road. Something that some of the newer Dingwall club people might not have seen. Maybe it will change your opinion of those old Yamaha basses. ;) This is one of the only 'parallel fret' instruments I'd have interest in obtaining.

IIRC, the story is that this Yamaha BB went to Sheldon when he was doing repair work and the owner asked for him to 'lighten the load' a bit. French curve in hand, he excised a bunch of the body into the shape you see, which later became the Voodoo body (although this one is definitely tubbier). IIRC the headstock reduction was also part of the process.

Nice! I'm hoping to have a twin to yours, sometime in the near future. Selling a couple basses of mine that don't get any play and ordering the Candy Blue with maple. :D Debating between a black or pearl guard, though.

Yeah, the bridge thing bothered more than a few people IIRC. I don't mind the straight pickups, but it makes more sense to angle them, given the placement and how the multi-scale setup really implies that they should be angled to work with the harmonics of each string.

Nice. I don't know how I'd like an all Wenge neck. The grain is pretty open and it's a pretty dense wood. I did like the wenge board on my old AB-1 and it seemed to give some mid-presence to the instrument. That maple/blonde is a really nice compliment and I bet it sounds great with an FD-3 in the bridge spot.

The AB1 in question is really bright when you want it to be, but I also love rolling off the tone, and thumping away with the neck pick up soloed. Sounds better than any pBass I have ever played.
