I have never played one.... How easy is it to adapt to a dingwall.. AND they look heavy.. are they? I would love to have a 5 string between 8 and 9 pounds... Possible????

My AB1 (BurningSkies' aforementioned bass) is a real light weight. Very low 8 pound range. When I play the bass it feels like it is all neck, but has no head stock dive. It is balanced amazingly well. I have owned some very fine basses, and they are for sale.

The Super P5 that I've listed in the classifieds is just under 8 lbs, a real pleasure to play. My new Super PJ5 is a bit under 9.

Thanks. The shots of my bass are ones I took, although there are some Dingwall shot ones out there.

If you are interested in them, there are a couple things to consider. The 'Super' series (both P and J and something in between, and some beyond) are shorter scale than the AB/Z-series/Prima basses. The comparison chart is here:

Although remember, that specs to advance often quicker than the site keeps up, AND sometimes asking for something different/special can get you far.

The other thought is that you can certainly find someone (or a dealer) depending on where you're touring or where you're based who can let you get some hands on with a model or two. From there, you might be able to decide if they're for you, or not, and if they are which models work best for what you like. I've only owned the long scale models, which I dearly love. I haven't had my hands on any of the F-style shorter scale instruments.

My first Dingwall bass was a five-string alder-bodied AB-1. It was the lightest fiver that I have ever owned at eight pounds even. I sold it to fund my blue SJ/P5.

Weights of my Super series basses:
2009 solid alder/morado SJ/P4 standard 8lbs, 11oz Bronze Age w/matching headstock
2012 chambered swamp ash/maple SJ/P5 custom 8lbs, 4oz Stormy Monday (transparent indigo)
2013 chambered swamp ash/morado SJ5 custom 8lbs, 9oz Colaburst w/matching headstock
2013 solid swamp ash/maple SP4 standard 7lbs, 4oz Sonic Blue

In my SJ5 case candy I received this package with the wrenches, control layout and Dunlop strap parts (thanks for those!). While six wrenches is (literally) a handful, the color-coded guide only lists five of them. Does anyone know what the black one is for? And it really is wrapped in black tape!

ABZ or 1 XXX 5 string

or

Super PF5

I love my ABZ5, and think the XXX with the Voodoo switching could do everything, but I just drool over the idea of a Capri Orange Super P. I'd get a 5 no matter what, cuz it's just more versatile, but the 37" B kills it, and I worry a 35" B wouldn't deliver everything I wanted.

I've got a lovely spreadsheet of options laid out, and in the end the couple hundred dollar difference between AB's and SP's is pretty menial for a lifetime bass.

If I had a free ticket to ride for any bass out of the Dingwall shop it would probably be an ABXXX. 37" scale, amazing pick ups. Not sure on the switch blade. Would probably beg for something like a huge rotary so that I could get all the series and parallel options between the three pick ups.

A Super P/FD-3, because 1) I don't have one, 2) Sheldon's opinion of how well these pickups 'play' together, and 3) I prefer the medium scales.

Those are very different basses in so many ways. I'd personally go for an XXX in a heartbeat.

ABZ XXX for me rather than the AB1 XXX. Lighter weight, and I prefer the ABZ matte finish.

I prefer the long scales, but there's still something that calls to me about the SP. Nostalgia, maybe. I was a pretty diehard P-bass guy coming up.
