I play a lot of different styles of music. Jazz, rock, blues, funk, R&B, alternative hard rock, metal, and what is labeled as stoner/doom metal (although it is more psychedelic hard rock). My Dingwall meets my needs in all those genres of music.

That's almost exactly my point, the AB is so versatile that it gives both Adam and yourself the perfect sounds that you're looking for, even though the two tones aren't even remotely similar ;)

One of the things I find most impressive about that clip is the clarity, as that low open note is actually a G#, meaning the bass is tuned down one and a half steps! o_O

Neck
Neck - Middle - Series
Neck - Bridge - Series
Middle - Bridge Series

switch lay out. Hell, what does all three pick ups in series on an xxx model sound like?

I never found the neck-bridge in parallel sound to be particularly useful on my 2 pickup AB-II. It's a bit different from the series setting but not enough, I could easily do without it. On my 2 pickup Combustion (Nolly configuration) the same goes, I find parallel to be next to useless. But, in addition, I find the middle pickup solo'd extremely useful and to my liking. I like it more than the neck pickup on my AB-II.

I would love to be able to isolate the middle pickup on a XXX, and am curious about neck and middle in series. For this reason, if I were buying a XXX now, I'd probably ask for two pickup selectors: one between the neck and middle pickup, and one between the result of that and the bridge. Or the other way around.

All in all, it would be perfect to have individual on/off switches for each pickup. But, in my opinion, only under the condition that they're wired in series, while somehow magically keeping signal levels even when multiple pickups are engaged. This seems very complicated to accomplish: cut the signal by a small amount when any two pickups are engaged, by a larger amount when all three are.

For sure, but I get that on my AB1 right now. For a three pick up bass, I wouldnt mid having something different.

Now if there was a 5 position switch, I would add it. If there was 6 position option, then I would try all three in series. ;)

At the recent Dingwall GTTG in Markham, I was really taken by the Sklar switch (both pickups in series is on the last position, instead of in the middle).

At the time, I hesitated at the cost (about $75 according to Sheldon), but I just ordered one. Armed with a pair of mini-switches for series/parallel coil switching, I expect to achieve a nice control enhancement, for about the price of a P-tone pickup.

With the OEM switch configuration, I occasionally have to hesitate for a moment, while I consider which position I need for a given tone. If I'm real busy at the time, I might leave it alone, or settle for adjusting the tone control.

As a musician, I don't care which pickups are active- I just want to nudge my tone in one direction or the other. The Sklar switch is much more intuitive- turn the knob one way to get fatter, and the other to get brighter and more cutting.

Oh - I haven't tried it yet - my Dingwall avarice is entirely net based at the moment. I do plan on going back to the shop at some point (it's 3hrs away) to try their huge range - but I'd have to leave my wallet at home to avoid an impulse purchase that would displease the other half! :)

I had a vague idea that the Darkglass pre was intended for down-tuning, but frequencies of 70/500/2.8K actually sound interesting. Would prefer a sweep or perhaps a dip switch to adjust the low mid between about 250 and 800Hz, but it still sounds interesting.

When I placed my order for a V4 combustion, I was told that the DG pre was not an option at the time, and NG-2 pick up placement placement was up to me aftermarket, as was a pickguard.

It is understandable that Dingwall et all doesnt want to cannibalize their own products, especially not with their budget instruments. On some of their higher end models, I bet they will be game, eventually. ;) As Sheldon said, their new switches dont require soldering, so it may be an easy swap aftermarket.
