Here's another clip from that new heavy project, with my Super J 3X sounding massive as usual...definitely glad to have a creative outlet while I wait for my other band's albums to be ready for the mix stage and the chaos of NAMM to ensue ;)

Thanks brother! The signal chain is in the video description, but I'm using the 3X with P Tone neck and FD3 bridge in parallel (both pickups wired in series)...the biggest tone shapers in the chain are probably the Darkglass B3K and the Cali76 :thumbsup:

NAMM UPDATE...

I swung by the Darkglass booth to say hi to Doug and Hugo today, and in the process I ended up playing through a Dingwall NG-2 with the new DG Tone Capsule...

I was so blown away by what I heard that when I ran into some fellow Spector artists in another hall I insisted on taking them down to Hall E with me to meet the guys and hear it in person.

One of them called it a 'total game changer', and that's right on the money.

Seriously.

It's highly colored set flat, acting as a boost and adding similar qualities to the signal you usually find from plugging into something like a Manley tube preamp or an 1176: depth, clarity, punch, dynamics and harmonic complexity.

It was a night and day difference when switching it on and off, the instrument was just so much more alive with it in the circuit; Hugo's personal Spector EuroLX (also equipped with the TC) sounded phenomenal as well.

I was fortunate enough to snag one before I left and, unless I miss my guess, every other preamp equipped bass I own will be getting one too...now I just need talk to Sheldon tomorrow about the best way to install one in my SJ3X with an active/passive bypass switch ;)

Here's a quick, slightly humorous anecdote from a pick-up R&B/Soul/Funk gig last night......

I played my Dingwall the first two sets, the guitar player who I hadn't met before complimented my tone. Just for fun I broke out an old Roadstar II 34"scale 4 string on the last set. After the gig the guitar player said, "that's a cool little short scale bass you got there". I'll say I'm 6'2" and about 250 lbs and sure that had something to do with it....but it still brought a smile to my face.

As some of you guys know...I'm on the Dingwall train. Monday I am placing the order and I'm bouncing between these two basses...SJ4 (PJ) and the SJ3X. Thanks to those guys who have spent time helping me narrow it down and all the advice so far. So what would the sound differences be or the pros and cons between these two animals be? My ears are open :)

Tough call. Making up one's mind can be the most challenging part of the process. Everything is a leap of faith, but buying a Dingwall bass takes very little for me. I sure wish I did, but I have no experience with the 3X model. My oldest ('09) is a Super J/P four string. It has, to my ears, the best precision tone of any precision I've played or heard. Totally killer. I know the J/J models now have the bridge pickup in the 60's position, so I would assume a P/J would also? I don't envy you this particular decision. Don't torture yourself or lose too much sleep - both models are truly Super basses!

Tough part is, I believe, that the xxx comes with a soap bar style P tone in the neck position.

The really hard part is color!

yep go 3x with a p tone. best of all worlds.

That was the setup I tried at the recent GTG in Markham.

Killer tones and flexibility.

Speaking of which, I got a package in the mail today. Looks like I'm going to be installing series/parallel switches in my ABZ this weekend. I can't wait to hear it...

I don't post in this thread much, but I have been a Dingwall owner since (I think) 2006. I own an AB-I. I have also played Dingwalls on visits to Bass Central (SJ4) and Jive Music (SJ5 ad ABZ).

Here's the thing...once you decide to buy a Dingwall, you can't really make a "wrong call." You just can't. I suppose if you spent enough time with all the various models, you might develop a preference between the scale lengths or pickup configurations or electronics packages. I'm sure other boutique brand fans have equally high opinions about their favorite brands, but I'm not sure any builder since Phil Kubicki has approached every aspect of the instrument design with fresh eyes the way Sheldon Dingwall has.

So sleep well and just flip a coin tomorrow morning. You can't lose.

I second all of these notions. This is what I was saying that it takes very little faith for me to invest in Dingwall basses - you can't go wrong. Not to sound snobbish, but honest: they are superior by design than all the rest. Although I've heard rumors, I've never seen an ugly one myself...;) ;) ;)

Ya you guys are right.. they ALL sound amazing...I guess I will narrow down by looking at pics of guys holding and playing them now. I love the looks of the long scale models....just not 100% sure I could comfortably span the low fret/notes. On my other basses, I can span 7th to 11th fret on the E string (just used as a reference to finger span width)...but that's as wide as my mitts will allow me....maybe as I learn to play, that will widen (?)....thanks guys for all your help so far...... :)
