Like I said, I would take an old Peavy 215 with the drivers I mentioned over anything found in big box stores right now. That is a 30 year old cab, with old drivers, that can be found for less than $400.

It is IMHO better than anything in current production from the big guys. It is just heavy, and not as shiny.

Mine is the shallow one with 1502's I think, not the square backs it technically should have according to what I've read. Tone = awesome. Size = unbearable. Thankfully it's got casters and there aren't any stairs in my house.

If it weren't for these pesky classes getting in the way of bass time. Luckily the funk band finally booked a gig for this Friday, otherwise I'd have tossed the trombonist in charge of booking out the practice room window for taking so long.

The 1502's are really nice sounding, and sound great as they reach their limits. They just dont survive that for as long as the 1505's. ;)

Thanks! :) We should all get together at some point. It would be fun. There's yet another guy around who's a TB'er and expressed interest in a hang out. Also, I'm sure that @bigfatbass would enjoy some kind of hang out too. There are a few other locals who would be fun to chill with maybe Gus H. and some others?

Also, there's a Peavey 215D on Craigslist, but it's loaded with Scorpions.
Still, I'm tempted, but I should probably just BUILD a 215.
Then I could use plywood instead of the particleboard that Peavey made those out of; save a LOT of weight.

To the question "What amp is good with a Dingwall?"
I've been VERY happy with my GK 700RB-II ever since I figured out how to gain-stage that amp.
But my Dingwall has flattered every amp that I ever plugged it into...

We can set something up for sure with the JGR. If you have the time ability to build, you can make something more manageable than the old school Peaveys.

My beastly old 215 (not D) is made of plywood. Probably something absurd like 1387-ply when you realize it weighs 120+ pounds.

If I weren't a student, I'd be rehousing my Black Widows into individual cabinets for an easier lug, and if I were actually making money gigging I'd say eff that and buy something big and Greenboy. For my portable rig I'm going to get a TCE BG250 1x15 for cheap on Craigslist. I'm doing a musical pit right now and the Ampeg I'm playing through has a microphonic preamp tube that picks up radio better than my car stereo.

I echo all the responses to this post. A rule of thumb is if you like your current amp/cabinet you'll like it more with a Dingwall. If you can afford a more powerful, more feature filled, or over all better amp/cabinet with a Dingwall the tones just get better from there. As tone is highly subjective, your ears will be the best guide and don't feel you need to get a different amp just because you buy a Dingwall. A lot of us play Greenboy designed cabinets with powerful, relatively transparent amps that let the basses great tones shine through.

This is my typical setup for medium sized venues:

My current rig (and it has been for a while now, say 20-odd years with slight mods along the way) gives me everything I need: flexibility (1 4x10 is generally enough), oomph if required, effortless clean sound with as much or as little of anything I want. I expect my Z2 to shine through this.

I've got TI Jazz flats. TI JF345's is the set I have on the five string Super J.

Here is a picture of how they fit on five string. I had to get a couple shorter cap head screws for the bridge saddles, the B string is a massive .136 with no taper at either end. I didn't recut the nut, but, if I was really, super picky about set up I probably would for the B string. These strings went on in 2013, and since it hasn't gotten tons of playing time, they still sound really bright and new. Too bright, too new. They need lots of time and sweat to season. Then they last forever.

The Super J 4 has the standard TI JF 344 set. The four string set spent a couple years on my last Fender J (pre Dingwall days) before they sat on a shelf for a few more years. I rediscovered them when I moved and remodeled my music space. I put them on the Super J 4 and played it exclusively for another year. They are still going strong, I've had them since 2007.

I've even got a set on the AB-5 string. The long scales were something Rollerburg ordered special.

My favorite strings. I'm thinking about putting a high C on the five string Super J, if I can buy a single string. And may be a set for AB-1 six string if I can get the super long set.

Bassstringsonline.com was the best price and service.

Thanks Singelmalt! I was thinking that 0.136" is quite a big B-string. Do you find it fits in well with the set? I am wondering if I should go with a 4-string set and source another B-string, but I'd like something that matches well.

I am also curious by the Labella Low Tension Flats. Their B-string is 0.118", which almost seems too small.
