Dingwall Owners Club

So how many times has this come up on here, and how many of you are sick of seeing it? Well it's my first time seeing it and all I have to say is TOO HOT! HOT DAMN.

Dingwall NAMM 2014 Base Super J SJ5 3X KR Black Cherry Mint Condition w OGB | eBay

If it was a maple neck I'd be in some surrious trouble right now. Had bad experience with dead spots on wenge necks and trouble getting enough fundamental to be present in a live setting, and this was from a very famous luthier. This though, that's a sexy sophisticated mature woman right there and she's giving me fits.

I feel her breath in my face, HER BODY CLOSE TO ME, can't look in her eyes. SHE'S OUT OF MY LEEEEEEEEEAGUE. Such a fool to believe I have anything she needs. :sigh: she's like the wind.

Is the price high for a used super jazz like that or is that about right?

It definitely seems wayyyyy high to me. That's probably why it's sitting. But if it's a one off I can see it going for more than the going rate for a used SJ5, especially with the xxx pup combination. Now if SheldonD shows up, he might disagree with me! Anyway, a bass is worth what someone is willing to pay for it I guess. If it were around the 4k mark i think I'd be willing to take a risk!

its high but it is shipping out from Japan so there's probably some exchange rate/tax stuff going on.

I just picked up a used Lakland 4401 for stupid cheap, and it just has me GASing even harder for a 4 string Dingwall. But everyone seems to be hanging onto their 4 string Super Ps and ABZs right now.

It is a gorgeous instrument with a mirror finish. It's cool how the reflected image of the light fixture looks so three dimensional. Enjoy playing that beauty, brother! :)

The finish really surprised me. It just feels like the entire instrument in one piece! Super light, incredibly well put together... DANG!
i do have the EBMM listed up for sale... but no bites yet :(. Going to toss it on reverb this weekend and see what comes of that. I will say that I need to sell it before I buy another Dingwall, especially since in the next 2-3 months I'll be buying a house...
buy a smaller house!

Someone please buy that AB1 6 string in the classifieds, so I don't do something dumb. Please.
I'd love to help you with this. Problem is wont be for another 2-6 weeks and will probably be gone.

Out of curiosity do you know If it has the 5 or older 3 piece neck model?

And anybody see that red dingwall on eBay with a 36 inch B is that right ? I can't find any pictures that match that model.

I can't tell from the pictures, and didn't know there was a difference to ask the seller when I was talking with him :-/ I don't know my Dingwall history at all... just know that I love my Combustion and want/"need" a 6 string.
The main thing keeping me from just saying "screw it" and buying it is that it's passive. I know it'll have a great voice, but I use on board EQ so much, that buying a passive bass is not a great idea.

I saw that one on eBay too. Looks shady to my untrained eye.

So I am considering another build... I already have a AB1, and a Combustion. I had been considering a ABZxxx or a SJ5xxx, but I think the ABZ is getting nudged out by the idea of a Z3....

Thoughts from the brain trust?

Very hard decision. I recently put in another order for an ABHS because I want to try the heavier wood, but I'm totally satisfied with the ABZ. I looked at the Z series and they appear to be fairly upgraded in their standard configuration so it's a great place to start if you are already going to add on some options. The one thing that kept me from the Z was that it uses a different neck and body profile. Since I know what the ABZ feels like and I'm quite happy with it, I didn't want to risk another configuration without trying it out first. Honestly it's probably fine. From the spec sheet the Z neck should be even thinner than the Afterburners. I don't even see how that's possible, though.

I was also thinking about getting an SP4 but I'm just too worried about the feel. I know it would be great but it's still going to be different than the Afterburners and I've gotten to where I don't want to deal with that as much anymore. I also can't quite get the configuration I want so I think I'm really just sold on the ABs now. Instead of the SP4 I think I'd want an ABZ4 with the full Glock package. I also want another AB?5 with the Darkglass pre to round out everything. Guess I better start saving...

Probably doesn't help much. It's hard to pick the best when there are so many top-tier choices.

Having both an SP5 and a 2006 ABI, and I know I'm not alone here in that, a lot of the decision lies in your adaptability. Can you go from a 4 to a 5 on a whim, 18mm to 19mm, 34" to 35", fretted to fretless? If the answer is yes, then you can have and enjoy both equally. Of course if you slap or play with a pick (I don't ) it may become more of an issue.

I personally never understood the I can only play a 34" mentality, but then again, others have given those of us who are weight sensitive ridicule.

My take is I prefer the SP series spacing and neck profile, and it feels and hangs naturally while standing. However, the ABI fits better on my lap, the headstock on each respective bass is at the right distance this way. As long as I'm familiar with the material, I can play either bass without a hiccup, learning and playing new songs is the only time I feel myself stumbling a bit, after I know them, no problem.

I guess I'm just saying these might be a few other variables to consider.

This is the original voodoo (cello) body shape. With those Barts, it may be pre-fire. I don't see anything iffy with the auction other than the seller didn't bother to measure the B string. I think it'll end up selling for much more than $2k. If the seller will inform you of its S/N, Sheldon could tell you more about it.

I jumped into Dingwall-land in 2007 with a wonderful 8lb alder/maple/wenge ABI. I played it for about a year before starting an order for a Z3. Long story short, the Z3 order got changed to a chambered alder/maple/morado SJ/P4 which happens to be the most perfect bass guitar that I have been blessed to play. After playing both for another year, the ABI was auctioned off to fund a SJ/P5. I prefer the 19mm spacing, the tones, and the comfort of my medium scale Dingwalls. :)
