Dingwall Owners Club

Yeah, we all just sit around on the forum, and watch your logon attempts. And then we laugh, and laugh, and laugh...

EDIT: On a more serious note, I just signed in. Haven't been over there in a while, and had to look up my ID and password. I had no trouble logging in, and there were recent posts including the announcement that Barry was leaving.

The most recent post was of somone's Combusition, with a VTBass 500 head and a boutique cab.

I didn't know there was head in the VT line. I've gotta get out more!

I check out the DW forum every couple days, Safari rarely ever signs me out.

I'm looking hard at a fEarful 15/6 in the classifieds here right now.... Anyone ever put one on its side on a tilt back stand so you could put a tube amp on top without it looking weird? I know the Greenboy page says the Cubes can be used with either the 24 or 26" side up... Is that the same with the regular FF?

I used to have a Yamaha 3-way cab that I positioned on its side to accommodate my tube amps.
It looked better and sat more stable, but the dispersion pattern was a bit wacky -- and the fEarfuls have a lot of science put into the orientation of the woofer, mid, and tweeter.

You might be better off putting the tube amp on the tilt-back stand and putting that cab flat on the floor.

Great point, I also wasn't thinking about the fact that the mid speaker in a Cube is in the corner regardless of which side is up. Eff it, I'm buying it. I can always get a stand or table to put over the cab to hold my head... Or get a micro head.

A fEarful doesn't need a tilt back. Part of the cool things that you get with fEarfuls, excellent dispersion.

I would put my 15/6 on a waist high table, five or six feet behind the drummers stool on my side of the stage. It would cover the whole stage and carry the room.

It would also sound good if I got crammed into a corner standing right up against the cab.

And I've used long speaker cords with the cab on the other side and my rig on a chair on my side.

Cool thing about the fEarfuls, they sound great everywhere.

Either that or a combination of recording process and post production, likely all three, and you can always pop your pickguard off and move to pickups to hear the difference yourself
I had not even considered that! Is the V4 routed for both pickup option
Having owned both, there is a huge tonal difference between the two...one of the many reasons why the XXX basses are so incredible
Hey, MDBass, since you have owned both the Combustion V4 and the NG2 what do you think is the difference then? Obviously the necks and bodies are the same so I assume it boils down to tonal options.

Yep, all new Combustions and NG-2's are universally routed, so move the neck pickup and you'll have most of the NG-2 tone.

The preamps do make a difference as well, the Tone Capsule definitely adds some color even when set flat, but the primary tonal differences come from the pickup placement...having the neck pickup closer to the bridge tightens up the bottom end and increases the midrange presence.

Just spitballing here, so on a 5 XXX, why couldn't the PUPs all be wired in series, and be independently turned on with their own DPST switch instead of the 4 way rotary (please bear in mind I know little about electronics if this is a stupid question )? I know someone was looking into a 5 way rotary, maybe if Sheldon & company ever catch their breath they can work on incorporating one for use in 3 PUP applications?

They offer the option of 3 switches for S/P/off on the XXXs if I'm not mistaken. And the crazy Voodoo Switchblade.

Been thinking of blacking out my SP5, so if I buy Hipshot HB6C 3/8 tuners, are they reversible (or is this even needed, my SP5 is at practice and we're on a 2 week break, so Ive only played it for a few hours at home, and once at practice).

Although they're not listed, I assume I can get the bridge and string retainer from Dingwall?

Any problems I'm not aware of?

The 4-way rotary works great for 2 pickups but without individual series/parallel switches for each pickup I found the tonal range on my NG-2 a bit limited. I had the 50K bass and low mid pots on the Darkglass pre replaced with ones having a DPDT switch. Push/pull on the bass pot for parallel/series on the neck pickup and push/pull on the low mid pot for parallel/series on the bridge pickup. This has really opened up the tone combinations on this bass in a good way. There are now 12 combinations to choose from instead of 4. The neck pickup in series with a bit of 500 Hz boost has a great P-bass vibe with a little less honk and a bit more focus - probably my favorite tone now. Neck and bridge pickups series with the pair in parallel, slight 500 Hz cut and 2.8 kHz boost is also a winner. These two also balance volume-wise with neck and bridge pickups parallel with the pair in series. Very pleased with the results, it worked just as I hoped. Loving that NG-2 now! I seriously think this is good enough to consider as a standard option.

On a 5 XXX, individual series/parallel switches for the 3 pickups could be used in combination with a DPDT switch to select either neck or middle pickup to feed the 4-way rotary. This would allow any of the 3 pickups to be soloed and parallel or series alignment of neck or middle with the bridge. Use of a push/pull pot with DPDT switch avoids having to drill another hole.
With neck pickup routed to the 4-way you'd have:
- neck soloed (parallel or series)
- neck and bridge in series (parallel or series for individual pickups)
- neck and bridge in parallel (parallel or series for individual pickups)
- bridge soloed (parallel or series)
With middle pickup routed to the 4-way you'd have:
- middle soloed (parallel or series)
- middle and bridge in series (parallel or series for individual pickups)
- middle and bridge in parallel (parallel or series for individual pickups)
- bridge soloed (parallel or series)

Having owned an ABZ-5 and now an NG-2, the shifted neck pickup position does matter and they are two different flavors of good. I'd like to pursue the configuration just described because it's a relatively minor modification from what is currently offered with the 3X option and adds several alignments which would be quite useful. If not configured at the Dingwall shop it could be a relatively minor aftermarket modification.
