Dingwall Owners Club

I think a "sold items" search on eBay and a search for "Dingwall " on the classified ads here will provide direct information, rather than conjecture.

That said, I think my tipping point from "fair" to "steal" on a Canadian Dingwall would be around the $1600 point, but your research would outweigh my guess.
Heh, the first things I tried were searching on eBay, on the Dingwall FS subforum and of course here on TB classifieds. The hard part is that Dingwalls don't come up too terribly often, and a 6 string is even more rare. Was hoping someone here could comment on it :). It's even hard to find what they would cost new, without calling a shop and asking (which, I'd hate to waste their time with, since I have absolutely no intent on buying a new one at this point).

Tough to say, since the prices on Dingwalls are going up.
Given the BluEQube, it's an older model -- so that asking price is higher than that bass sold for new.

That said, the asking price on that one is similar to what I paid for a mint AB 1.5 (Limited Edition with upgraded electronics) a couple years ago.

So it seems like a fair price, but not a great price.

Gotcha. That was what my gut was telling me as well. I wish I could've gotten in on those AB1.5's - those were from Jive, yeah?
I'm very much leaning to holding off on this one, and either waiting to see if a Combustion 6 does become a real thing, or a better priced 6er. Thank you very much for your input!

That AB6 is certainly not a bad price, but it isn't a price that would make my wallet twitch in my back pocket.

Yes, my AB originally came from Jive, and it's the perfect combination of features for me.
I liked the "hotrod" vibe of my Z2 a little better, but this AB has a wider range of tones that works for me really well.

SPJ5 owners, do you find the bridge PUP combined with the rotary really brings that much to the party? Most of the input I've read here is that most people use the P PUP 90% or more of the time, so would it be worth it to add a bridge PUP to my SP5? I've reached out to Maurillio, so I have a pretty good idea of the $ involved.

I'm asking because I'm reconsidering a custom build, as I've stated here a few times, I love my ABI for home practice, and the SP5 for band practice, and would take both to gigs (I always take a backup, so the ABI will be there anyway), so other than GAS, there is really no compelling reason for a build.

My gigging is with a Classic Country band, so the tonal need is that solid, ballsy sound in a fairly low volume band (1 Telecaster and 1 acoustic/electric rhythm, with a steel player on higher profile gigs). I only need a Jazz bass tone on a couple of songs a night (e.g. Reggae Cowboy, 8 Second Ride, Give Me 3 Steps), but they are in different sets, so I can't just use the ABI to cover one set, and can probably get pretty close plucking nearer to the bridge on the SP5. Obviously with a bridge PUP on the SP5 I can get that tone, or would I also need a series/parallel toggle?

By the time I mod the SP5, I would be in the $ neighborhood of a custom build (also looking at swapping black hardware for the chrome ), but I wouldn't have the long wait, and selling my P5 will cover modification costs..

Looking for input....

Confused. Adding a bridge pickup to your SP5 and changing the hardware from black to chrome, would cost $3K or more?

Grrr...

I almost never get asked to solo on any of my current gigs.

We did a set today with Irish roots musician Brian Houston. He is an extremely energetic, over the top performer, and he wanted a more muscular and aggressive sound. He particularly focused on myself and the drummer during soundcheck, coaching us on how to layer a bigger and more aggressive-sounding build. We were all pushed to step up our game.

When I accidentally doubled a lick with him at one point, he felt inspired to give me the nod for a bass solo.

For the first time in the 2 years I've owned my ABZ, I got into trouble with the extreme slant of the frets up in the dusty zone. I blew two phrases in a row, above the 12th fret. That shook my confidence enough that the rest of my solo was pretty lackluster.

It's not like it was the end of the world, and we still got a bunch of compliments afterward.

Still, my pride was hurt. I probably would have aced that solo if I'd been playing my parallel-fret 5-string Precision. On the other hand, the huge, ballsy sound of the ABZ was perfect for the remaining 90% of the set.

I could start a round of heavy woodshedding to clean up my upper-register playing, but the simplest thing would be to continue on as normal. I'm about to rout my parallel-fret bass for a bridge pickup anyway, so all I really need to do is bring that instrument the next time I play with a whirling dervish like Brian.

First-world problems...

I much, much prefer Audio Kinesis over the greenboy designs.

Not everything is for everyone. That is why they make shirts in different colors? ;)

I wouldnt be sad to see an Audiokinesis, Baer, or Barefaced cab provided as backline. Sure I prefer my greenboy cabs on my own time, but if I cant get a world class tone out of any of those cabs, then I am not blaming any of the gear. :woot:
