I guess because we've never seen a bass with two P style pickups, you see P/J's but no p/p's there must be a reason for it, maybe a p style in the bridge sounds wrong, I guess? I'll ask Leo when I see him

Okay, so I just got off the phone with Sheldon and ordered:
SJ5xxx, 3 P-tone PUPs
Swamp Ash body, open grain painted satin transparent white
Pickguard delete
Preamp delete
3 series/parallel switches
Black hardware
Maple neck/board, black dots, blue Luminlay side dots
Nickel strings
Sheldon said nobody has tried a P-tone anywhere but the neck, so no one knows what it would sound like. As GW speculated, if during install/set-up a problem with running 3 of them arises we can make changes accordingly.
Gonna be a long 9 months.

Well, a P/P configuration is not unique - I think there's even a club for it here on TB (Yup - found it - Dual P Pickup Club! | TalkBass.com)
However, it'll be cool to not only hear how it sounds with the Dingwall pickups, but with the additional P pickup as well! I've been kind of bouncing around the idea of also (thanks to some people here) routing one of my Combustions for a faux 3X setup, and dropping a P-tone in the middle position. Thankfully, I have other priorities so I haven't gotten around to doing more than day dreaming off and on about that.

There is (was?) a Fender Jazz version with two P pickups and you can find pics online. It's the model with a black, curved top. John Entwistle used to do two P pickups.
As for the Dingwall P pickup, it's not just that it has two split coils at an offset under the soapbar shell. FD-3s have the same shape under the shell, as far as I know: 2 strings under one side, 3 under the other.
EDIT:
The bridge pickup would sound better moved towards the neck, I think. Also, in this layout, the bridge pickup should be supercharged to match the neck pickup when blended.
I'd be very interested in playing a passive 5 string SuperJ 3X with 3 P pickups and extra switching to get neck+middle in series.

I have owned my ABZ 5 Natural Ash for over 5 years, it is undoubtedly one of my favorite bass, simple passive, organic no thrills, plug and play perfection. I loved the look of the ash body grains but for a year or so, I had this vision that a lot more could be done to enhance its looks and really bring out the texture of those ash grains forward with a few stages of transformation.
One day I saw a picture of a faded ash body seafoam green telecaster and I was hooked. I took my bass and that pic to a local luthier guru friend of mine, here in UK at Guitar Works Guitar Works and asked him if he could materialize this project I had in mind, he said yes and explained to me that to obtain the result I wanted the bass would have to be sprayed, first black, then sea foam green, then white, and then the hand sanding will take place to remove the bulk of the white, and then gently rub the sea foam green to reveal the black underneath which would have by then sunken through the grains and then finally once the right effect was obtained he would have to seal the lot with a thin coat of polyurethane just like the original Dingwall product.
Here is what he did...
All he needs to do is to apply the lacquer and it's done.

Bocete, we have similar ideas, unfortunately, it would take a 6 way rotary to get all the combinations I would want, which would probably be size prohibitive. I would settle on being able to get the 3 PUPs solo'd, any combo's beyond that would be gravy. Guess I'll have plenty of time to sort it all out.
I used that setting during my last rehearsal, and absolutely loved it! Played it through my Monique 700 into my Baer ML-115, and it made me totally fall in love with my ABZ tonally, like I had yet to experience. And the ML-115 totally killed it. Very deep, growly and very present low-mid push. And the 6" mid was perfect for the upper range.Same for me with my SJ actually!
My church gig just got a new stage with a bunch of additional lights, and the AC power is now very noisy for some reason; I was getting a lot of hiss with both pickups in series, so I tried switching them to parallel (which killed the noise entirely) and after a bit of bass and low mid boost (as well as treble cut) on my clean B7K, I discovered my new favorite sound.
It turned out to be the church's favorite as well, I must have gotten a at least a dozen comments from both the congregation and worship team about great my bass sounded

Man, that looks so good. Sorry, but I may have to "copy" you on that with my ABZ 3X…only in blue.
Do Dingwalls with two pickups have them in slightly different positions compared to the 3x basses? They don't look the same, and it doesn't look like you could fit a third pickup between the two on a 2x. Wonder what effect that has on the sound...seems like the 3x isn't necessarily the best if a compromise has to be made.
It's an NPS prototype set for medium scale Fanned basses. They're working out very well. Designed for Fanned basses 35"-32". Not exactly reduced cores on the prototypes. I'm keeping the red ball ends on this set Fanned medium scale too.
