Hello Dingwall Owners Club,
I could use a little advice. I've been wanting to try a Dingwall bass for a while now (you guys are great at giving G.A.S. with your posts). Does anyone know anything about the Voodo Prima 5. I have an opportunity to buy a 1998 version. It has Bartolini pickups and pre. Is the sound of the newer models with Dingwall pickups and Glockenklang pre's much different (an improvement) from the older electronics? Thanks in advance for any input.

I'll let you know about the pickups shortly. My personal feeling is that the Voodoos are undervalued currently in the used Dingwall marketplace, given the build quality, materials and attention to details. In the long run, I would expect prices to climb in the coming years. Drop me a PM with what you've got going on.

I have not spent much time with a newer canadian made active dingwall outside of @groovaholic 's AB1.5. That said, I will say that the Barts on my voodoo are a different animal than my passive AB1, and my combustion. Less open on the top end when set flat, but that is compensated by goosing the treble. My only gripe with my Z1 is that it has parallel pick up with a pan, and not the 4 way selector I am used to on my AB1 and combustion. That said, it is still a tone beast, and any dingwall should be worth your consideration.

My feeling was -- I've never liked using both pickups at 100% on 2-pickup basses; the tone is nice, but the mid-scoop due to phase cancellation always makes me want to favor one or the other.

Since the Dingwall series, neck, and bridge settings don't thin out the mids, I'm happy to have those positions intact when the blend is centered.

But the blend lets me get a lot more mileage out of parallel.

When I used to use a Jazz bass, you needed to pull back on one of the pickups' volume slightly to get them to 'open up'. I always felt that this gave them a little more low end than both together at the same time.

Listen to others as I only began researching the Dingwalls a bit ago, but the thing I may be able to comment on is what Sheldon described to me of the Glockenklang pre, and that it is going to be the pre where the treble is a bit higher and cleaner, more hi-fi than the other pres. I would suspect this still holds true in comparison to the Bartolini.

Right or wrong, I ALWAYS run my Super J/P4 passive and in series. Love the punch. But, I have an OPB-1, which kinda sucks. Maybe with a different pre Id run active, though I never have yet :/

The OBP-1 is what I have in my V/Z, and I've always liked it. But I roll off the highs and only really need the low band, which is down around 40hz.

I was always a series setting guy, until I got my ABZ. I really like the parallel setting for that bass. I also like the Glock pre for that bass. It seems very transparent to me, and is a great match for that bass. I don't hear much difference between the passive tone and the active tone with pre set flat, except for some additional volume. As for the Voodoo Prima, I also like the parallel set up on that bass, although I wouldn't mind hearing the series just for grins. I almost never favor one PUP over the other, unless I want a bit more definition, which can be had by blending slightly toward the bridge PUP. The sweet spot of the Voodoo Prima to me is right smack in the middle, with the pre amp engaged and the treble rolled off slightly.
