Hello Dingwall Owners Club,
I could use a little advice. I've been wanting to try a Dingwall bass for a while now (you guys are great at giving G.A.S. with your posts). Does anyone know anything about the Voodo Prima 5. I have an opportunity to buy a 1998 version. It has Bartolini pickups and pre. Is the sound of the newer models with Dingwall pickups and Glockenklang pre's much different (an improvement) from the older electronics? Thanks in advance for any input.

They are different, and both flavors of good. If you like clarity and a bit more openess to the pickups, especially in the upper mids and highs, you will want to go newer with FD3's. If you like the darker upper range, the Barts of the Voodoo Prima are great. I like them both for different flavors of awesome. lowphatbass has one that he replaced the electronics in with FD3 Pups and a Aggie pre (I may be wrong on that) and he is happy with the mod.

Well, I just jumped in. Just bought a Purple Dingwall here on Talkbass. Not sure I like the color, but am wanting to try one out.

For Sale - Dingwall combustion MODIFIED

Guy is taking it to the paintshop today to have the “word” removed. Ships monday.

Not sure I am in love with the purple. It originally came in “Trans Black” which I would have liked better.

Here is what it looks like with the "word" photoshopped out.

I don't think so. I guess the original owner wanted it to look more like an NG-2. But a custom color. Is quite a striking bass.

The original pick ups were replaced with the Canadian wound pick ups and the one pick up was moved. Not sure what moving the pick up did.

They're routed under the guard so you can do the z2 config. if you want.

What sort of bad experiences did you have?

They shipped me a bad set of strings, then had zero follow up when I tried to contact them. For the $55 I spent it will never be worth a gamble again. I can get dingwall strings shipped from Canada for less and Sheldon stands by his product.

Damn... Wish that had been available when I bought mine.

Could you please explain in detail the ABII HS 5/3. I have an AB1 that I LOVE and am thinking about getting the HS to compliment it. Obviously it's heavier and had the 3x pickup situation. But what should I expect in sound compared to the AB 1 and what do the toggles do? I play finger style and really enjoy passive basses, I like how the AB can go from traditional passive to a modern sound that seems active.

Regardless of the orange peeled textured paint job he did, it's a beautiful bass.....great way to get your feet wet in the Dingwall realm. Probably sounds killer.....good snag!! Enjoy

It's done: For Sale - Dingwall Super P5. I hate to part with it but the Afterburner 1 does everything I need and more. Maybe someday I'll grab a Combustion as a backup.

...speaking of which, has anyone ever installed a P-tone into a Combustion?

While you are waiting on a real answer, I will share my interpretation of this as this was a question I asked Sheldon just yesterday.
As you say a good bit heavier a bass, my understanding is 12 lbs or so. The more mass will effect the sound, most probably more sustain and possibly slightly thicker, meatier. For instance, with the Darkglass pre I think the sound could be compared to other heavier basses like some of the Spectors.
While I like the idea of them practically speaking these are not for old guys like me. The lighter basses are much more attractive. I have an old Kramer that I haven't used in about 15 years because it is just too heavy to be comfortable in a night of playing. But for folks who don't mind the weight, these are an attractive alternative to the lighter Afterburners.
I would think, again with the Darkglass pre, that a person should be able to compensate with the lighter bass to come close in all but raw sustain. And with the Glockenklang I would suspect that the sustain would be slightly increased as well, but perhaps not so much on the " thicker, meatier". Pure conjecture, I do not have one.
And perhaps Sheldon will give you a real answer and explain the toggles as well, instead of my conjecture BASSed on personal experience with other basses. It is really great to have so many options.

That is exactly what I'm looking to add to my ABZ. I really love the bass, but I want to nudge it slightly from the more modern to the more old school. Sounds like it should do that nicely. Now I just need to get it installed!

I hear ya on the "old guy" issue! Lol! Sheldon's basses balance so well, it is probably not as noticeable, but I think I'm a bit past the point of wielding a 12 pound axe.

I don't know if there's a place where it's gone into explicitly and in detail, but the best place to start is probably the Dingwall message board for specific questions and to mine for data by searching: Invalid Link Removed
