yes, any where on Varick St really. Shots, Lukins, Celtic Harp, etc. a few other places in Utica but the hot ticket is still The Gig or Tin Rooster at the Turning Stone.We may have to find a bigger room.We'll figure it out. I also know a few others in the area who might be interested as well as at least one Dingwall player out in Rochester who I don't think is on TB.
Hey @nervous , where are people going to see music in Utica these days? Still Lukin's on Varick?

Yeah. Joe Sweet pinged me about Lukins a while back but it got lost in the shuffle, so I need probably get on that. We used to do The Electric Co. right next to it and I've done the Saranac Thursday summer thing a few times at the brewery. I have friends who do Turning Stone, but I don't know that that's our gig...
A Saranac Thursday on the big stage is the hottest ticket. A very tough get. The Electic Company became Shots awhile ago. Played there many times. Lukins can be a nice job. Different demo than other Varick St places. You should try it out.

But back in the Electric Co and Rainforest Preserve, and Saranac days it was a band called Hot Steppers, which was another reggae/soul/dancehall outfit. We played the first couple years at Saranac before it got to be a huge huge deal. I mean it was still big and fat packed with thousands of drunks, but not quite the profile it later got.
Very cool. The Rainforest is a name I hadn't heard in s long time. Interesting tidbit on Saranac. I was in an electric duo for 20 years called Nervous Rex and we played the very first Saranac Thursday. In the lot under a tent. Look at it now.
Enough side chat I guess. Back to all things Dingwall dammit!

Well I'm so happy with my Afterburner 1 that I'm considering selling the Super P I bought back in September. The Afterburner's neck pickup soloed in series does indeed get pretty close to the P-bass sound, close enough for my purposes. (I do not have the P-Tone pickup in my AB1.) I spent about an hour comparing the two today, and since I couldn't find a comparison between these two sounds anywhere online I figured I'd make one myself. If there are particular bass lines that you guys want to hear I can put together another short demo.
EDIT: I should add that this is by no means a perfect comparison. The AB1 has 1-month-old Dingwall Stainless strings while the Super P has 4-month-old strings that I believe are Elixir Nickels, so there are going to be obvious sound differences from the strings alone.
I put in comments on the sound clips to indicate where I have the tone knob set. I also included the song names of the bass parts in the descriptions.

Both sound really good and in a busy mix, I don't think you'd be able to tell much difference. A P tone would get you a tad closer in the mids IMO but the normal neck is darn good.

I definitely agree with you on that. I haven't played around much with the active solo neck sound (AB1 is in passive mode for the demo) but I'd imagine you can get even closer with the Glock pre.
Were you brave enough to do unlined fretless? I know I couldn't even imagine that and I have been playing fretless almost exclusively for 2 years.
no way...its the one in my avatar. lines for me! I've had several Dingwall fretless 'made' by swapping the neck. each was good. The Super P works well as fretless. very organic.
Looks delicious! Does that beast have a serial #?Got word last night that after a required week long wait 'at the border' my wire transfer has finally gone though, so theoretically, I'll have this by sometime tomorrow. : ) I'm excited to see what shows up...I know it's a well used, well gig-worn bass. I didn't ask for detailed pictures, fully trusting the seller (you may remember the matching 6 string Z3s that Sheldon produced recently...I'm pretty sure they'll keep the seller happy for many years to come). Once it arrives, you can expect I'll be taking a bunch of other pictures...Its just in my nature. I'm hoping that I can play this on Friday's gig, if not, I've got another a few days after.

Yep. Got word that it won't be here until Friday, though. Turns out that the cost of overnight international was pretty extreme and the seller (even though it's on my Fed Ex account) decided it was way too much. I appreciate his consideration, and can wait a day.
The bass is serial number #1098. It's a 1994 'first year' Voodoo Prima, and one of the first 12 (I believe that's probably the bass output that year). There are no records to that era as the fire took out everything. Dingwall instruments I believe start at 1001 the first 30-40 being guitars, but the serial numbers not necessarily being sequential early on. There are about 100 instruments with parallel pickups before Dingwall started fanning them. It has a mahogany body, with quilted maple top and back. It's got a maple neck (with something like 9-12 laminates) and pau farro fretboard with markers. I'm the 3rd owner, and I've been told that there's over 1000 gigs on it. It's got original sperzel locking tuners. The preamp is present, but was removed (by Sheldon I believe) and the bass is currently V/V/T.
Interesting. Mine is serial no. 1039. It's spec'd just like yours, but has the slanted PUPs. It also has the Sperzel tuners. Oh, and mine doesn't have the Dingwall label on the top and doesn't have any fret markers of any kind. But it does have the multi-laminate neck.

The shop didn't necessarily number sequentially, so numbers aren't an absolute. I believe that all the earliest ones I've seen have the body logos.
My serial # is lower yet and has a reference to 1994 penciled in on the heal of the neck. Burning your bass is probably from '93....Then again Dingwalls have pretty much been in a constant state of refinement as long as I can remember. Nobody up there is waiting till the next model/calendar year to make changes. Also, production runs were really small so changes would go into effect every few months it seemed.
