Hmmm... New pickups?

This is a cool development.
 
So, after a few days of working on the Voodoo Prima instead of playing on the bass, I got 3 hours of playtime in last night. I practice at home with headphones and a Korg Pandora. Last night I was mostly running some of my favorite riddims to recordings.

I won't be able to say what I think of some of the tonal aspects until I get in our rehearsal room with my full setup tonight, but there are some noticeable differences from my other Dingwall experiences, much of which I attribute to the neck construction. The bass just feels a bit stiffer. The string tension when playing is a bit more than on the other standard scale Dingwalls I've played, and the body/neck doesn't seem to act as a vibration soak. It's just a bit more 'solid'. That translates into the low end being tighter and even more clear, it sort of what you'd expect with a neck that's got more mass as it's both thicker throughout the length than others I've played but also has a bunch more plies of wood. It makes it feel like the stuff down low plays faster and/or is just a bit cleaner.
 
I'm really interested in rewiring the neck pickup on my ABZ6 to series, but I'm apprehensive about how difficult it may or may not be. Does anyone who's done this mod have before and after pics and a little step-by-step of what this entails?
 
Post a close-up of your control cavity.

Basically, IF you have 4-conductors coming off the pickup, it's pretty easy.

Let's call the conductors ABCD.

Parallel wired would have A&C going to hot and B&D going to ground.

For series, A goes to hot, B goes to C, and D goes to ground.

So, you'd only have to change B&C

Honestly, I think I can do the rewiring just based on what you've said! I'm gonna take a look at it in the next few days and see if it's a viable project.

I've always wanted to try an SJ so I guess this is my chance. Can anyone tell me what I can expect from this passive bass with the Super Fatty's as compared to say...my Tone Capsule equipped AB 1 3X? Thanks.

Wow! I usually don't go for green bass finishes, but wow! Congratulations on your beautiful new bass! I usually run my fatty-equipped SJ5 with the two-band glock active and flat. To state the totally obvious, it sounds like a killer jazz bass. :cool:

If you want to be slightly more ambitious, you might consider adding series/parallel toggle switches. Then you can try different settings easily. A lot of people like the bridge in series and the neck in parallel, but I settled on both in series.

If I did that, I'd replace the volume with a push-pull, but I honestly the only tone I don't use on the bass is the neck pickup solo'd (and it's parallel now).
 
Thanks Bill! Looks like it's as "simple" as disconnecting black and green from the neck pickup connection points and then putting those two together. As unprofessional as this may sound, it looks like I could just snip those really close to the solder point, strip some covering off those wires, then tack them together with a little solder... seems doable.
