Most people believe that the only benefit to be derived from the fanned fret paradigm is the extended range of a B string. I think Sheldon's four string long-scales are just as awesome as the fives. Plus, they handle drop tuning like no other four string I've played.

I think you hit the nail on the head and it is only a matter of time until his 4-string basses are as popular as his 5 string basses. I think even Sheldon does not yet realize his full market potential with the 4-strings; although he certainly does realize a part of it as he is shipping the 4-string Combustion/NG2's. I did go ahead and order the ABII build as a 5 but have almost regretted not going ahead and taking a chance with a 4. Certainly we will see what the popularity of his 4-strings are going to be with the Combustions/NG2's this year.
In general, I have been seeing a fairly large number of people who were dedicated 5er players go back to a 4.

I have a 4 string (non dingwall) fanned fret. I think it's a 36.5"-34" fan. The speculation is correct, it's still great even without a B string. It's the only 4 string I'll touch, but I still prefer my 5 string

I enjoy playing my one five string, but still feel that, as a whole, they are a slightly different animal. They just don't respond quite the same as a four. For lack of a better term, compressed compared to a four string.

My 4 string Super J/P is the second best playing bass I've ever owned. The first was a Super P4

My next Dingwall will be a custom SP4. I love love love my ABZ6 and the extended range is amazing for so many things, but I find I approach playing 5/6 string and 4 string very differently.

Of course, I'd also love a fretless DW.

In other news, I rewired the neck pickup to series (took all of 5 minutes) and love it. I need to tweak the level adjuster for the series setting to get it even with the other settings again, but I'm really loving the neck PU solo'd. Had funk ensemble rehearsal this morning and it worked super well on a funky blues version of Summertime.

I've got 6 4-strings, my ABI doesn't sound compressed vs any of them ('59 CS NOS P, '66J, Modern Player Telecaster, Antigua P, Hofner Clone, MIM JPJ). Haven't touched any of them in over 6 month, I may unload one of them as my SJ5XXX gets closer, at 26 weeks and counting

Yeah, it's an older Combustion model, predates the V4. I don't know the exact age of it (I got it used), but it doesn't even have the magnetic battery cover. I need to put different strings on it... I don't know what's on it, but they don't feel or sound near as good as the strings that are on the others.

Got to play the AB I at rehearsal tonight. Daaaaaaamn what a fine bass. It quickly asserted itself as the primary bass for this project, with the black V4 Combustion being secondary (alt tuning [Drop-A] / backup)... the teal/blue one will be kept in half step down tuning for my other main project.

Sold my heavily modded Fender Modern Player Jazz 5 (the John East J-Retro Deluxe was incredible) and part-traded my Combustion V1 for this stunning Super J which weirdly looks like the other two basses had a baby. Absolutely amazing bass, can't stop playing it - the 32-35" scale suits my smaller hands much better.

What strings are people using in their Super Js? I'm wondering how the Elixir Steels would sound on this thing... it also has a J-Retro.

The new pickups could be the ticket to justifying a new Dingwall.

I have a SJ4 with Super Fatties, a SP5 with... the P pickup, and a fretless SJ5 with FD-3s.
Been wanting a long scale one again for a while (I had an ABZ for about a year). Make it 6-string and with a wenge neck for variety's sake.
I had been considering the upcoming Stranberg Boden bass or possibly a Little Torzal but now I think I'll stick with what I know works for me... being another Dingwall.
