Dingwall Owners Club

Hi

This is a risky question: can I please have a summary of what is NOT good about the Dingwall Super P5? I am very interested though want to learn the bad parts - just so I can make an educated decision.

One thing that came to mind is: is the scale of the D / G strings too short?

Cheers

I've been playing one as basically my only instrument since I bought one on my honeymoon four years ago. The scale length of the d/g is actually the best feature IMO. Adds a bit more fullness to the notes compare to a standard Fender type. If you compare it to a 35" scale bass as many five strings are, this is even more apparent.

The single weakness, outside of personal preference things like string spacing, in my opinion is just the fact that it's not an actual Fender pbass, a little more modern sounding, but it still oozes that vibe.

QUite a lot. They are voiced very, very differently. There's also different flavors of Glockenklang pres - there are 2 and 3 band versions available.

Glockenklang 2 band:
Treble: +/- 18 dB@18 KHz
Bass: +/- 14 dB@40 Hz

Glockenklang 3 band:
Treble: +/- 18 dB@18 KHz
Mid: +/- 9 dB@550 Hz
Bass: +/- 14 dB@40 Hz

DG Tone Capsule:
Hi-Mid: +-12dB 2.8kHz
Mids: +-12dB @500Hz
Bass: +-12dB @70Hz

Beyond the center point of the frequency on each, just the inherent character of the preamps are different. It would behoove you to find basses loaded with both to try out to really get a feel for them if you're making a decision on one for a custom order.

I feel strange. For the first time in years I ordered a bass that's not a Dingwall.
Need a bass tuned in drop C for a new project and I didn't feel my SJ4 wanted to go there. So I pulled the trigger on a 200$ Epiphone Toby Deluxe.

If this doesn't work out I guess I'll be saving up for a D-Bird.

I'm kind of surprised by that, eloann! What were the shortcomings that you noticed or felt?

It could probably have handled it no problem with the right strings and setup but I like keeping it as my dedicated standard / drop D bass.
The new project is a kinda lo-fi vibe rock trio so I figured it was worth trying something different. Also I've been looking for an excuse to try a couple new pickups that seem very cool on paper (or rather on screen).

At worst I'll have something to give my 16 year old cousin who's starting out.

Finally got all the hardware changed out on this one.

Had to send one of the knobs to a buddy's machine shop to get drilled out to the right diameter for the pickup selector pot but MAN am I happy with this.

Looks great. What bridges did you end up using for your hardware swap?

I found a set of five used for $70. Took that as a sign.

There are very small shims under the bridge saddles on the Combustion from the factory and I spraypainted those satin black to match even though you can barely see like half a millimeter of 'em because I knew it was gonna drive me crazy otherwise.

Alright, so I did a quick cleaning job on the babies. It was damn bright outside, and I don't have time to really post process these photos... but, here you go. I hope you guys like large eye candy, as I didn't downrez these much.

This is "Pi". P-tone in the neck, Glockenklang 2 band preamp retrofitted.

This is "Phi". Pretty much stock, for now, until I get some time to work on it and drop the 3 band Glockenklang in it:

And this is them both together:

Both are strung with Payson strings. Phi is strung F# with Payson's new/beta/prototype F# string (which I have a few things written to show it some more, just have to get time to record it!). Pi is mostly one of his standard sets, but the B string is again new/beta/prototype, built for Drop-A tuning. It works fantastically well in both standard and Drop-A.

Anyone got a 4 string NG-2 yet? haven't seen any pictures or videos yet.
I have some 4's coming in July/August.

Oops, forgot to ask, what are the differences between the Glock and the Tone capsule?
More "Hi-fi" clean versus more aggressive, although I have not sat and A/B'd them. I did A/B the Combustion/NG2 and I would say same the thing. But perception varies from player to player concerning tone.

It's getting closer and closer to my AB to be made and I'm starting to make certain of my order choices.

I'm going the ABII with wenge neck. 3xxx 3 band glock, d-tuner on B. Matte ducati pearl white.
But I've recently been loving how the ABHS look with their wood and figuring, it reminds me a lot of my current #1 bass.

Te only thing is I want chambering and love the F hole. Anyone know if you can get the same woods as the ABHD but the features of the ABII?

Cool, thanks. I assume holes lined up and such?
