I think all the ABII's all have had the magnetic battery covers. The first ABII's did not have the chambers. Mine is about 12 years old and doesn't have the chamber.

Happily trending in my own peculiar direction.
After some searching I found one other that did not have the battery cover. @BuffaloBob4343's old one.
I am assuming that the batteries are under the rear control cover on those earlier models?

Messing around with some F# goodness tonight. It's taking some (read: quite a bit) of adjusting to for really dirty tones. Normally I don't add this much grind/distortion, but I wanted to explore a bit. This is a riff from an old song from my theatrical operatic metal band.

That was more audible than I thought it could be. The 5153 (What's that?) in particular was nicely spooky, if that makes sense. I fiddled with F# tuning once and couldn't hear that string much at all and so gave it a miss.
The 5153 is the name of the Peavey 5150 amp with the Red Channel activated. The recordings are Bass -> Axe-Fx II -> DAW. But, through my ThunderChild, I could easily hear the overtones of the F#. I have a blocking EQ shelf at 55Hz with a steep dropoff, so there was no fundamental going anywhere. It'd just be a muddy mess if I didn't do that.
No problem. More to come, especially after I get a few rehearsals in with the string and can dial everything in a bit tighter in a band context.
The notes are definitely tough to distinguish that low, but the riff is also a pedal riff. I'll bet as you change chords that low F# string will be a bit more distinguishable holding roots. Plus the guitars will fill in some of the missing information at a higher fundamental. Grind tone was definitely my favorite!
Agreed, especially with just pedaling on F#. I've got a few more bits I'm going to record when I get time that are a little different. Then I'm going to go through the process again with the other new Payson string - a new Drop-A string (that works wonderfully well at B!).

What's the spec of your ABI again? (or the one you used for these recordings at least)
This is the Red flamed maple AB1. Passive, stock pickups (no P-tone, yet - hopefully I can find one). I forget now if I had the BluEQcube in or out - I think in. There will definitely be more recording coming. I almost put the F# string on my blue Active AB1, but decided to not.
Excuse all of the dust and such... it's been a lot of rehearsals and gigs back to back to back lately and I haven't had time to really clean it up.
The overall signal chain looks like Dingwall --> Axe-Fx II [Input -> Compressor -> amp -> cab {Aguilar DB810} -> Parametric EQ -> output] --> Laptop (running Reaper)

As much as I like red basses, I've only owned one - a solid red double-cutaway Hofner. I especially enjoy the transparent reds. 
I haven't played with a p-tone in a few years, but I never tire of the beautiful tones of the split-p pickups on my SP and SJ/P. For me, it just doesn't get any better.

One of these days I'm going to clean up both of these basses and do a proper photoshoot with them.

I'm a few months ahead of you - about 5 months in. I haven't had confirmation yet, but based on the rough 9 month timeline I should take delivery around September/October, all being well.
I'm going to ask that a P-tone pickup be sent out with it too.
Yeah, I'm not sure if I am still in the 9 month window, or if it got bumped up to 12. My dealer told me Sheldon was planning on upping build times to 12 months right around the time I placed my order. I haven't talked to him since - don't want to bug him. We'll see eventually.

I can't do a P-tone in mine, as it's a 6 string. I want both of my 5s to have P-tones, but that's looking unlikely.
