Nice! I have one on order that will look extremely similar except is will have 3 pickups and switches. There is just something about the Natural.

I agree. There's something organic and visceral about the natural finishes. I know it's purely psychological, but I feel more connected to the instrument. It's somewhat like comfort food, in a way.

There is one option you might've noticed and another that you can't see. I have an extender on the B-string for times I'd like to have a low A. Hipshot has a three-position extender now, but I'm not sure if Dingwall offers it. It might be useful for hitting an open Bb drone while noodling in the higher positions. The option you can't see is the carbon reinforcements under the fingerboard. They're typically installed with some of the other neck woods (e.g. walnut) in the AB line, but not in the maple necks on the ABZ.

Good luck with the delivery. It was worth the wait.

I played that exact bass in Australia recently. Absolutely gorgeous and is the reason I built my ABI

I can't speak for Dingwall's matte/satin finishes specifically, but I noticed that my matte/satin basses developed visible wear much quicker than any of my gloss finished basses. This is particularly true in the area where I rest my right thumb, as well as on the cutout where my right forearm rests.

What the Spector folks have noticed is that there is a difference in the tone between a matte and a gloss finish, the bass seems to be a tad brighter with the gloss finish.. YMMV on this one..

The less protective trans - white finish I have on order doesn't bother me, as my bass playing career winds down, I'll still be able to put some MOJO and player wear into it, something not really possible with the hard poly finishes. After all, I'm not buying a museum piece ;)

Yeah, blue pearloid is my preference but those are all layered White/Black/White/Blue or something and I thought that'd be distracting, and blue sparkle was the only way to get a solid color as far as I could tell.

Do it, it's like the best color scheme possible.

Which finish do you have on order?

Here’s the word from Sheldon…


"Gloss and matte are the same price. There are two different types of matte. Open grain satin on swamp ash (ABZ style) or sealed and leveled satin on alder or swamp ash (like a matte black Combustion). You'll need to specify which. The open grain satin sounds warmest and is the thinnest. Sealed and leveled will be slightly brighter sounding and wear slightly longer.

The deadline for changes would be roughly 6 months after the order is placed."


Anyone have pics of these finishes? Sometimes its hard to tell with the pro pics on the Dingwall site and they're not always labeled well.

SickAura, the finish I have on order is an open - grain transparent white satin over ash. Sheldon did warn me it was not protective and subject to wear and damage; however, I am careful with my gear and it is not subject to abuse or hard handling. The upside, this type finish does substantially reduce weight over sealed or poly finishes.
