For what it is worth, I shot the seller a couple of questions on it last night too. Here is his (verbatim) reply:
I went on YouTube and tried to find some clips of any Dingwall of that vintage and struck out. It might actually be not bad to have something completely different than all of my other Dingwalls. But, I'd kick myself if I bought it and disliked it enough to really consider swapping the guts... don't want to turn it into a lot of work or money hole
FWIW I have a Z2 from this same time period (SN 3015) with Barts and Agie pre and it kills! My favorite Dingwall so far, and I've had 7 over the years, including a Z3 and a Prima Artist.....
The (older) FD3 shells will fit, no problem. I did have to drill new pilot holes for the wood inserts, and swapped the pickups back to the original barts, it wasn't broken to begin with and so on.
At that price, even gutted, I would take a chance on it!
Doooo you happen to have any recordings you could share? I'm pretty tempted to get it.
Hmm. I've recorded with it, and the Z3 and Prima, but nothing that I can really get my hands on (privately owned studios, just showed up for a few tracks on this and that for friends) and certainly nothing that would show tonality differences to convince you.
I'm not the only person who notices, my friends, band mates, and my wife prefer the older Z2 wherever I play.
I won't admit to not NEEDING the 3 other DW in my herd though!
Seriously, even if it were gutted I would take the chance on it. Contact the seller and make sure the pickup cavities will work for you, I doubt Sheldon was using multiple routes at the time, but make sure first.
I found a pic of where I trial fit the FD3 bridge and Ptone neck pickup before I committed to drilling and installing the new inserts, they were ever so slightly smaller than the Barts to my eye after installation. Sorry I only have the one after pic, I seriously preferred the originals and switched back after a few weeks. I also included a shot of the original pickups for comparison purposes.
Oh cool. I thought it was hard to get those non-round pickups.
How would you say those Barts differ from the FD3s? I play in metal bands, so trend towards aggressive more than silky smooth.

I was going to mention the older FD3-4L's are getting scarce, and the FD3-P in the square shells are now non existent from Dingwall....
I still see them pop up now and again for sale used.
The Barts, at least in this case, are much hotter and aggressive sounding than the FD3's, at least to my ears. That's why I switched back, this puppy just SNARLS with a set of Circle K's....
I just went back and checked, that one for sale has a one piece ash body, and a 24 fret neck (which is hard to find on a Z2).
If you wind up getting it, PM me, I could send you a spare set of FD3-4L's in the square shells to try and see if you prefer them.

BTW, that would be a killer bass for metal, black Z2, black headstock, RW fretboard, plus it has the more modern bridge system that was used right up until recently when he tweaked them somewhat.
I see a distinct lack of love for barts over here and on the DW forum, so I was pleasantly surprised when I loved the bass as is. I switched them out primarily because of the dissing on the barts thinking if I like it now, I'm going to be blown away if I switch, but not so.

So far I really prefer my Voodoo loaded with Barts over whatever is in my ABZ5.
Part of me wonders if it is the Blend vs. 4 position switch as opposed to it just being the Barts. This one has a 4 position if I recall where the Voodoos had a blend.

Yeah, I am itching to try a Z neck - wish someone local to me had one - and that they would let me try it.
Not that dingwalls in general don't already, but a Z will change your life.

I did a couple of searches on this thread. There's a few versions for the screw terminal posted, and one picture of the old solder one, but I can't see the connections I need on that one photo. Was hoping someone had something closer to an actual wiring diagram of it. I feel so dumb - I should've made sure I had those pictures before firing up the iron
I had pre fire zebra voodoo Z1, that while it was a great player, and sounded great solo, just didnt do for me what my other dingwalls do. Some combination of the Bart pick ups and pre, and the hard wire in parallel pick ups just wasnt working for me. The Z1 is an amazing player, and I thought about gutting it, but decided to let it go, and maybe keep my eye out for something that suits me better.
Given the option for my 3X combustion, or that z1, I would take the combustion 100% of the time for tonal reasons alone.
Hmm...I'm getting the same result. I must be mis-remembering having seen it.
A good tech should be able to sort it out for you, though.

Hey, can you post another pic of that 3x Combustion? I remember seeing it but don't remember where. Sounds like a really cool machine.

Well that baby's on its way to me. If I'm underwhelmed with the Bart's I'll shoot you a pm, assuming you'd still be willing to let go of the fd3s
