Well, my AB1 has traversed all but about 375 miles of its arduous journey. It has cleared customs at JFK and I'm not sure if that means it will head out tonight or tomorrow, by truck or by plane. But it is truly amazing that it has traveled all the way from Sydney in just 5 days! I transacted the bass last Wed night, and it is now this close already. And it came the long way, through Belgium and England rather than through the West Coast!! This is like Christmas for grownups!

That's what I was thinking. I know that Fed Ex bought TNT last year, so maybe it goes Fed Ex from there. Usually, anything that arrives in Syracuse before midnight moves on to Buffalo and is out for delivery the next morning. So I'm doing the periodic refresh on the TNT tracking site to see if it moves out this evening. I'm more than just a little antsy now! :hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::woot::woot::woot::woot::hyper::hyper::hyper::smug:

Aaaargh! Now the tracking status says: Held. Awaiting payment of duties, taxes or charges by receiver.

There shouldn't be any duties or taxes because of NAFTA. I hope TNT is NOT planning on holding me up for some huge brokerage fee! And of course, I can't reach anyone over there tonight, so I have to grind until tomorrow morning now. :spit::mad::vomit::rollno::banghead:

No duties, yes, but taxes are very possible. NAFTA does not mean goods travel tax free across our borders. If there are any taxes to be paid (which is likely) you can be certain that they will add a fee for brokering the shipment. It really sucks, but for those of us who have to buy most of our gear out of country it's no surprise at this point. In the future you can plan ahead and broker your own shipment if it's anything like importing into Canada.

Well, it turns out that because the invoice doesn't state that the bass was made in Canada, they assume that it was made in Australia and they are trying to collect duty from me based on Australia being the country of origin.

In my correspondence with George last night, he said he did include Country of Origin in the paperwork, but apparently none she has access to for some reason. So now she wants a Certificate of Origin from George, who of course is sleeping at present given the time difference. Of course, they won't inspect the instrument and just see that it is made in Canada! This is FUN!:rollno:

NAFTA does not exempt taxes. I have had a couple discussions about NAFTA with customs agents. You may very well owe some money on the package. I have only used TNT once or twice and they were the type of company to find charges, like Fedex or UPS, but I have never imported anything into the United States so your experience may differ.

I know that, and the issue is not taxes, but TNT has determined that a duty will be due because they can't seem to find the proper country of origin in the paper work. They want to charge me over $230 in duty because they have defaulted the country of origin to Australia. I am awaiting a response from George in Australia. He should be able to provide some sort of proof of origin, as he imported the bass into Australia. It just holds the bass up for another day.

They tried actually. Even with NAAM, Sheldon and Joel tried to help me out. They sent me a blanket Customs Certificate of Origin (under name of importer, it says "Various."), which I passed on to the woman in charge of my shipment at TNT. She wrote me back and said it needed to have MY name on it as importer. :rollno:

So then I emailed her back and asked if she really needed it with MY name, or did she need it with George's (or Bass Gear Direct's) name on it, as he was the one who imported into Australia from Canada before he sold it to me. That was about 2 hours ago, and I have yet to receive a response.

I guess I'll wait and see if George has a copy of his Certificate of Origin, or at least some paper work showing that the bass was imported into Canada. In the meantime, Blue sits at JFK for another night. :crying::atoz::eyebrow:
