Dingwall Owners Club

There's plenty of examples of AB's, NG2's, and Combustions shredding heavier styles floating around, and plenty of great Super J vids, but there aren't as many soundclips that show just how killer a Super P can sound in the role normally reserved for an overpriced, vintage, straight-fret bass.

I recorded bass on this track and mixed it, the rest of the parts were recorded by the guitar player. I'm even more excited to work on the rest of her EP, due out in April, as I did all of the recording and am working on mixing them as we speak.

This song features nothing more than the Super P5 with TI flats into a Broughton P15 right into a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface, and the usually studio magic of compression and a little EQ.

What are you concerned about?

I play in standard tuning with the standard Dingwall string sets and the tension is fantastic.
Im just worried the tension would be too high in standard tuning with that long scale length. Although it may be perfect because I prefer light gauge strings but the 125 Im running right now is too loose with my 34" scale 5 string

You'll be perfectly fine. Unless you specify otherwise, they come from factory tuned to standard. I never thought "oh, this string is too tight" on any Dingwall I've owned or played.

I hear you on the Sp5, nice track BTW, gonna give the others a listen when my housework is done

My SPJ5 has a very pleasing growl when the P PUP is solo'd. The SJ5XXX can get close, but the growl is smoother if that makes sense. I love having both basses, and we're reworking our sets so I can use both basses, the SPJ5 will have a set dedicated to P tone songs.

Ironically, the string tension is actually lighter for your left hand and more responsive to your right hand with the long scale basses.

Imagine your playing being listened to under a microscope and you're in the ballpark, those basses will literally make you a better player

I'm also going to be ordering an NG2 soon (finally) and had a question for you guys: does anyone know if I can put a hipshot detuner on the E string of the 5 string model? Looked around a bit for answers but couldn't find anything super conclusive.

Nope. The lever travel is blocked by the tuner of the B string.

You will find a Dingwall absolutely perfect if you prefer a lighter string, but find them too sloppy on a regular scale instrument.

Well, my AB1 finally cleared US Customs this afternoon, nearly 10 days after its arrival. Turns out I was dealing with an incompetent customer service rep at TNT. I finally took the time to research NAFTA and the procedures for clearing goods originating in US, Canada, and Mexico, and discovered the ONLY form I needed was downloadable from the US Customs web site, and filled it out, had George add some info at his end and sign it, and went over the rep's head to submit it because she wouldn't act on it!

From there, it took three hours to clear Customs. I could have done this last Tuesday if only I could have gotten the rep to answer any of my questions. TNT Customer service has expedited the package to overnight via FedEx, and so I should have it tomorrow. If anyone ever wants to buy a Dingwall from abroad, and needs to know the skinny, feel free to PM me. It's super easy and will take zero time if you know what form to fill out and what info to provide.

What's even more frustrating is by the time you order another dingwall from Australia policies will have surely changed and the hoops you have to jump through will changed. Doh!!!

Actually, Nate, it's pretty much always been this way since NAFTA was passed. But who knows this stuff until you need to? My mistake was waiting so long to research the problem myself. I've been really busy with work, so I wanted to be able to rely on the customer service rep in the brokerage department, as she was supposed to know this already.

I told her from day one that this shipment was exempt from duty under NAFTA. She should have been able to tell me exactly what I needed to do. Instead she was useless, and she actually misled me into believing there wasn't any way I could easily deal with this. My bad! Anyway, the good thing is, I figured it out in spite of her, and the customer service rep I got hooked up with today was awesome, and cut two days off of the delivery because of the delay. Sometimes you just draw the wrong card!!

Unreal! I'm glad you'll finally have it in your hands tomorrow. I got my new (used) Super J on Friday and played it at my gig Saturday. The gig wasn't quite what I hoped for since I was sick and the sound was weird (on stage), but we played in front of 600 people that loved it. I have to say I love the natural, unplugged tone of this bass. The walnut neck and overall different woods from my PJ have a very different sound without even being plugged in. Love it! My facial expression says more about the sound than the bass. Lol!

Every photo I've seen of that bass has been stunning. It looks comfortable.

Thanks! It is beyond beautiful in person. The walnut neck and headstock just set it off with the redwood top. And it is comfortable, a fair bit lighter than my PJ actually and plays like a dream. I dig the feel of the walnut neck. It really is every bit the interesting and unique compliment to my PJ that I hoped it would be.

I won't be surprised if things do change soon though is what I'm saying.

I'm glad that your bass has finally cleared. Sometimes things can go perfectly smooth. Others not so much.... as you mentioned and it always seems to be the case, it's all in who you deal with. Heck. I coulda been living on an acreage right now but I strongly believe our application to port our mortgage sat on the wrong ladies desk.... for too long.
It was long enough that a law came to pass in the mean time that meant that we couldn't even qualify for a mortgage of the amount we currently hold in this country. Ooopsie. Off on a tangent.

Anywho. Things are changing so quick these days.

I'm glad your bass is almost home. ;)

Well I just got notice that my ABZ6 will be shipped from Dingwall HQ after the crew gets back from NAMM!

:hyper: The wait is almost over!!!!
What finish, pickups, and electronics did you get? That's exiting.
It is so cool to get these basses and open the box for the first time - almost like one's birthday as a kid. I have an ABI and ABHS incoming within a couple of months

Anyone going to NAMM please report back on the NG2 Swirl basses. The pics were awesome. I ended up being unable to go to NAMM this year so gonna miss out on seeing these in person. I introduced Sheldon to Jeff and Sheldon is supposed to have some Genzler Bass Arrays and Genzler MG-800 amp at his booth for demoing the Dingwall basses.
