I'd like to join this fine club! Just received this ABZ-5 on Monday, and I am loving it! The tone and feel of it are absolutely killer...it's replaced my Sandberg as my #1.

I had to look that up :smug:, but I might look one up depending on what kind of finish is on the headstock.

Edit: I heard back from Sheldon, the finish is polyurethane, but he's cautioning against painting the engravings because of the possibility of the paint bleeding causing fuzzy lines.

Given the coating, I'm sure you'd want to test on a polyurethane coated piece of wood to see what would happen with the coating, but you'd think burning would be a little more straightforward - plus they have lines to follow! :woot:


P.S. - now that I double check, I think it is pyrographer, not pyrographist (though that sounds fancier).

The same one is sitting on the wall at l and m here with a glockenklang 3 band in it and I've been ridiculously tempted over and over again to bring it home....I've got a constant case of DAS.

I hear ya. Being that my local L&M is basically down the street from the dingwall shop, there is usually at least a few hanging in the bass room. Sometimes Sheldon will bring in his prototypes like the first 4 string combustion and d-bird. Luckily though, the rest of the bass section is fairly small and boring. I don't usually have much reason to go browsing.

I don't currently have a NG2 in, but I have a Peavey USA Cirrus and I can say it was neck comfortable going back and forth to compare the two basses. I have had some really bassball bat neck type basses and those would not be comfortable going back and forth.

Not really what you asked, but I have an ABZ-5 and an older SR-405, and switching between is easier than my Fender Jazz-V with the wider spacing at the bridge. Front to back, both are similar (to me anyway) and very comfortable to play.

You know Payson has released flats for Dingwalls, right? If not, check them out:

I don't play with flats nearly enough to justify them right now, but I may pick up a set this year and throw them on one of my ABs just for giggles.

Yes, I've tried the ground wound flats. These actual flats aren't out yet, I pre-ordered what seems like ages ago
