Thnx J, I appreciate the info. I,m trying hard to make a decision here so I can get it on order, but I've never spent this much money on a bass, but I guess if I can commit to $5k, I might as well go for $7k, the Z3 with the crotch walnut X top and wenge neck and finger board is looking mighty handsome to me, I can afford it, but need to figure out how to justify it to my wife, especially after I'm going to receive the NG2 I have on order in a month or two. OH and did you get the maple neck, or wenge ? I'm wondering which is more stable??????

Yeah, I have had the same thoughts. But I do have what I call a "porch bass". The problem is I reach for one of my more expensive basses to head out onto the porch and almost never pick it up.
With a new band and gigs coming up this spring I think for the bars I will take a medium priced bass and not the higher priced ones. And the ones with the chicken wire stretched across the front maybe the porch bass. Just kidding, but how many of you ever played at such a place? I did in my younger days and discovered there was a reason for the chicken wire.

I've played at some pretty rough places but never "chicken wire rough" I don't think we have a lot of those in Canada in comparison to the states.

My acoustic will see porch time but it's more like lake or camping time. I agree that to play something substandard when you have instruments that are awesome seems kinda silly on the home front. Even being so comfortable on my Z makes it hard even to think about playing anything else at a show..... a party is a little different I think.... but still.... I hate to settle.

When I go to a music store I'll pick up 5-6 different basses and very rarely does a "shelf" bass feel desirable maybe good but not desireable.
That said, in my neck of the woods shelf basses aren't Roscoes, mtds, foderas, wyns, etc. I am fortunate that there is the odd dingwall on the wall and I guess that's where the impulse desire comes to buy them as they are kinda like diamonds in the rough.
I've been kicking myself for a few months now as I passed up on a trans black combustion 5 with a rosewood fb for $1000 CAN. I went back a week later and it was gone. Would have been a great "porch" bass.

Hey rockinbilly, I do understand the dilemma for sure. But it seems that following a really positive gut feel on acquiring a bass has worked out well for me in recent times. But I usually just tell the others that "this one makes a different sound".

I have a maple neck on the AB1 & wenge on the ABHS.
Both only needed 1/8" adjustments on the truss rod when entering a different climate though the full wenge neck seems to make notes pop out a bunch tighter & faster than the maple/wenge combo.

On a side note. My Z3 has a walnut/maple neck that is slightly more sensitive but never posed a problem. It's my main player too.

Thnx Jase, I do like the look of the wenge neck and finger board. The NG2 I have coming soon is, of course, maple neck/fret board and I really don't like the light colored look, but I,m getting it for a practice/back up bass, and will use the new Z3, when I finally get one, for gigs. I appreciate your input, thnx much!!

Got that 410 Berg crammed in there. Bet ya'll sounded good. Reminds me of some of the blues bars I played in Mississippi. We were packed so tight you had to hold the bass right in against your body against the wall or it would hit a dancer!

I haven't seen a chicken wire setup for a very long time, but 4 years ago we played at a country bar (metal band) and there should of been chicken wire - although it wouldn't have helped when the escaped con pulled the gun. Luckily no one was shot except my guitar player's car window.
