We got this configuration to work after about three attempts on my 2017 NG-2
First, switch the original bridge pu to the middle and the neck to the bridge.
Wire the P-Tone in reverse to the instructions. Fixes phase issues.

Ah, thanks for measuring. I used to work in the field of magnetics (pun intended) and found magnetic fields and the measurement thereof to be very interesting. Thanks for posting this.

It was made by WD Music and fitted by my Luthier, Brooks Cobb, who also installed the P-Tone.
I am extremely happy with the overall upgrade and completely understand why Dingwall is simplifying the NG-2 to -3 upgrade!

Hey fellow Dingwall fans….I need some advice...
I bought the Dingwall you see in my avatar (Super PJ) a little more than a year ago. It is by far the best bass I have ever owned for craftsmanship, quality, playability, clarity etc.
However, I am wrestling with the overall tone. It’s just too modern/HiFi for my taste. This is especially noticeable higher up on the D and G strings
I need something thicker/meatier/authoritative
I have tried different settings, strings, amps, cabs, pedals and everything keeps pointing back to the pickups
By comparison, I have an AVRI Jazz that I put DiMarzio Model J’s in and ….well….it just THUMPS the Dingwall in the thump department. So much so, that the Dingwall has taken a backseat and I have started thinking about selling
Have any of you tried different pups in your Dingwall?
Is there anyone who can make a custom set?
Any advice appreciated!

look at your right hand position, with the "fan" it is real easy to play closer to the bridge than you think, on the d-g strings.
Interested to hear what gets said. I had an ABZ5, and had similar tone issues, and I had a Nash PB63 that out thumped it, as well. I looked into replacing the pickup with a P-tone. When I tried that pickup on a Super P, I still wasn’t moved. Eventually, the ABZ moved on and the Nash is still here.
I had a few folks tell me how much thump they got from their Dingwalls, but my hands and gear never satisfied my ears.
I’m back in the market for a D-Bird, so I’m curious how that will play out. I’m sure I’ll love the feel and craftsmanship, and I’ve heard demos I like.

This is also what I found. Really changes the tone by moving the fingers/pick.
I think the new(ish) FDVs go a loooong way in helping provide some old school whoop a$$. They have a very strong mid, especially low mid presence.
I have a D Bird and couldn’t begin to imagine needing more thump. In fact, I have to reign the thump in. It’s like pulling the pin on a grenade, placing it between your legs and driving down a cobblestone street in a ‘64 Willy’s.

Joking aside, and this is just from my own personal experience: I've got a Lakland Skyline P-bass that has enormous amounts of thump and push in the low end. However, since starting using the SJ for some of my bands everyone has commented about how clear, yet still full the bass sounds. I can imagine that the SP would have the same effect. The other day I put a an old set of D'addarios XL 40-100 on the SJ, which I normally use for the P-bass when it is not strung with flats and the SJ gained A LOT more punch in the low mids. Maybe you could try with a different brand of strings.
Also, I remember someone having nordstrand making them a P replacement with alnico magnets for his SP. That could also be an option
Have you tried reversing the P pickup and just lowering the pickups a bit? My SP5 has always had the reverse P setup and have always thought that’s just how P’s should be built.
You could also try an FDV pickup in the bridge. I will eventually posting clips of my SP5 with added FDV bridge pickup.
Nordstrand has built pickups for at least one user in this group with a PJ setup.

This is true and I have been conscious of this. I play about as close as you can get to the neck for sure - I am hoping this isn't the issue!
I haven't tried reversing yet as I was worried about the E/A getting closer to the bridge - but I have nothing to loose at this point!
Thanks for the Nordstrand tip too. It would be great to hear from someone who has gone this route

That was me. It was a NBD after I installed the pickup! Mine is a NP-4a with AlNico V magnets and custom spaced for a four-string Super P (or SJ/P). Mine are not shielded. Nordstrand can shield them on request. They are VERY reasonably priced for custom work!
What was it that made you want to make the change? If I am looking for thump, is this the ticket?
All the buzz about Sheldon's (AlNico V driven) FDV pickups got me curious. I wanted to hear the difference, but the split-P FDV is not available yet (Sheldon does plan to develop it), so I went custom... I get plenty of thump with either pickup in my maple/maple/swamp ash SP. The Nordstrand has a more open sound and is not as aggressive as the FDP. I don't have the ability to describe it well, but it is a beautiful sounding pickup.
