I contacted someone in Dingwall sales who told me yes, FDV's are available in the square shells. @bebass (my friendly neighborhood dealer :)) is checking on the price of a pair for me. If I was mis-informed, I will find out this coming week...

About 6 months ago I replaced all three of my FD3s (round shells) on my SJ5 to FDVs supplied by Dingwall.

I just dropped this on one of the FB groups, but just took the new NG out on the road for the weekend...


First weekend on the road with the NG(3), first weekend of using it band context. This is a great bass y'all. Totally met my expectations & exceeded. I've got a 'reverse 3X' switching setup and played all weekend with it in Neck-Middle series. Some quick observations:

- This bass feels tighter and punchier intrinsically with this bass. It also feels faster in terms of the note envelope.

- The Darkglass TC: Small adjustments go a LONG way. My 'fuss spot' is the 500hz low mid control. I found my self jockeying that throughout the weekend. Rolling back a little on some material and really leaving it at flat or up a tiny bit when I wanted a bit more presence.

-I don't know if it's running neck/middle-series or the DG-TC, but I really ended up not needing much if any boost in the lows. I'd expect the placement to enhance the lows and it does...but in a very natural feeling way and not in a muddy washy way. Think just beef in the 'punchy' zone.

-The on-board EQ with the DG becomes way more 'subtractive' to me than additive... My 'core tone' right now is with the 500hz pulled back just a very little bit off of flat and I roll the 2.8k off a good amount. From there if I need to add bit of those back in for different vibes, I do.

-The output on this bass is a little hotter than the Rastaburst. On our first set of the weekend, I found that I occasionally was hitting my preamp input too hard on transients. A quick adjustment to my Monique and the rest of the weekend was smooth sailing.

We played in Hartford and the sound engineer actually made a point to come over and say how perfect the bass sounded in the room (both during check and after the show).

Sunday we were at Garcia's at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY (first time in that room) and the sound engineer again was saying how perfect the bass tone was in the house. Cool to stretch out in a building that's held some of the most legendary live performances...

I'm used to getting positive feedback from FOH, but in this case getting un-prompted comments in two rooms in a row is telling to me. Also, and I knew I'd be doing some on the fly adjustments; I did some quick changes to my Monique setup. For those who know this preamp, I ended up using the lower input level setting, and run the 'bass' control flat rather than the slight boost I usually give it. The "Mid' control on Mo' nests in between the two mids on the NG, so it's a really nice compliment.

Absolutely no problems at all. In my mind's eye it feels just like my old AB in terms of thickness and contour. I can tell that it's thicker but not in a difficult way and not in a way that makes you think that the action is higher if that makes sense. It has the same asymmetric contour as the AB's and Z's and the same compound carve up the neck as well as compound radius. If you get along with an AB, you'll get along with this. (that was actually Sheldon's thought when I first discussed, and I totally agree).

With the Voodoo-Prima the handful of times I gigged it, the neck felt unwieldy when I got on stage with it. Not at all that vibe here.

But don't Zs have a thinner neck? Wasn't the Rastahurst a Z?

They do. The Z's are thinner but the actual carve (shape) of the back of the necks are the same. There used to be a comparison grid on the Dingwall site (no longer there with the new site) gave actual neck dimensions. The NG's are 1mm thicker than the AB's IIRC.

And IIRC correctly the Z is 2mm thinner then an AB!?!?

The Z shape is thin flattened "C"
Vs the AB being medium "C"

That's probably right, about 3ish mm, though those C's aren't like other basses that have a 'C' shape the carve is thicker on the bass side of the neck and thinner on the treble side, then as you go up the neck the back flattens out further.

A guy like Ed (FRB) can probably tell you when the current carve/thickness happened. I'd guess that it's probably sometime early 2000's around the time that Voodoos formally became "Zebras". My voodoo is not representative given how very early it is, and it's got a very very different construction and shape.

I would love to see some good photos of his collection. It looks absolutely amazing.
