Do I need an 8x10?

only if all the bass is coming from the stage and not the PA and you are playing really loud. I've always made due with either a 4x10 or a 2x15 cab.

+1 I own an Ampeg 8x10...I got sick of lugging it to shows, upstairs etc. I got a Schroeder 310212. half the size...all the balls!

Totally! It's definately not "lightweight" (although Jorg is putting out Neo cabs now that are lighter), but it's lighter than the 8x10. Let's put it this way, though: I can load my Schroeder into the back seat of my Buick and take it to practice... all by myself! No way with the Ampeg!

If you like loud, an 8-10 can't be beat by ANY cab. I've tried all combinations that there are, and NONE compare to an 8-10. Buy one!

It said: "I will use my rig for general shows with say big bands, concert bands, pit work etc. I wont be using it for on stage playing probably, maybe once , but i dont intend to much."

If you are advocating use of an 8x10 for use in a big band, much less a pit gig you are insane and have obviously never played in these sorts of things before.

I have this habit of reading the top post and sending a reply... What brands are avalible near you besides Ashdown? I love the Ashdown heads but don't like the cabs so much...

Instead of buying onbe big cab like an 810, try looking at 2 or three smaller cabs that could then be combined for bigger gigs... like say a 4ohm 410 and two 8ohm 210s? that'll make up an 810 in total if your head can run down to 2ohms? lets you also use the 410 or 210s separately for smaller and intermediate shows...

This is your answer.
I now own a 210/115 as well as a 410. I can tailor my needs as neccessary. Most of the time, with a good amp, the 210 is usually more than sufficient. If you are doing a rock gig, bring the 210/115. Versatility is the key. I barely move my 410 anymore. Couldn't imagine moving the 810 around.

I dont do a massive amount of gigs at the moment, all my time is spent studying but will be this year and in years to come doing a lot of pit work and others i listed. Im 15, its unlikely i will be playing in a stadium.

You guys say you like 8x10s, some of you guys say NO?? I probably would love an 8x10, big time, playing through it!!!!!

Are they actually that big though? Its not like theyre 6ft tall or anything?, guess if I had one, i could take it round with me, and then always have it to do some real big gigs and concerts. It would be possible to use one wouldnt it?? I want a big amp!

I thought earlier that I shouldnt be having an 8x10, but now some of you are saying get one, please can someone just confirm

BTW, are those schroeders available in the UK, and how much? And Avatars?? Where can I get them from?

You will not get pit work if you bring an 8x10 to the first rehearsal. If you were Will Lee and brought an 8x10, you'd get sent home saying to come back when you had appropriate gear. It's that simple.

Everyone saying "get an 8x10" did not read your first post, or only read the part that said, "I like it loud." If you want pit work, it doesn't matter how you like it.

Let me reiterate, this time in bold: it is morbidly idiotic to bring an 8x10 to a pit gig. You will lose the gig at the first rehearsal. You can play an 8x10 in a bar, even though it's overkill, but you cannot play an 8x10 in a pit. The end.

I played JC Superstar in a pit with full horns, keys, drums, guitar, singers miced, etc. I used an SWR WM10. 80 watts, 10" speaker. I had it at 3. It was too loud.

8X10? Come on, let's get real and quit with the "penis" rigs. Use what you NEED.

Have you ever been in the standard pit? There isn't enough room to play in most of them, let alone have a cab with a 24x18 footprint. I almost always end up with my amp under my seat. A GK200MB is a great pit amp - the footprint is about 14x7. My 2x10 rig on its side was probably 18x16 or so, and it was tall, so it couldn't go under my chair. The amp took up too much space, really.

Your best bet if you want a nice pit rig is to get a 1x12 or smaller cabinet. Maybe you could buy 2 so you have another for your rock rig.

Everyone ought to own an 8x10 at some point - but not at the time when their only foreseeable gigs are with pits and concert and big bands.
