Do people really quit talkbass?

I'm not an expert or opinionated enough to argue in the Basses or Amps sections, but I actually like watching you guys argue in OT sometimes. Matty's squabbles ( like that one up there ^) are pretty entertaining. That boy just wont shut up until the other person loses it! :D

I'm never leaving TB.

EDIT: Now they've made up, I guess.....

I hardly think the term squabbles is appropriate. :p

Im not that much of a prick...

Maybe I should not have said "tone"...or elaborated. The 20,000 dollar upright is much louder then mine, projects better, and vibrates better. Actual tone, to me, seems only a little better them mine. More midrange, more brighness.

And for the record, I have never owned an expensive electric either. I am strictly in favor of a middle of the road piece of gear, as that is sufficient to get the job done. You don't need the ritter.

But Bryan, you obviously have missed my SX point. If that's all a person can afford, you think I would make fun of that? That would be cruel. Go back and read my posts, if you are so inclined.

I only took issue with the absolute glee and smugness of those who claimed they would leave their pre-CBS bass at home and take the SX because it sounded better to them.I called BS on that (and was vilified for it) but I still maintain....it was TBs version of "grunge"...in other words, taking immense pride in low-fi and cheap equiptment because you are such a great player that you could make a bar of soap with rubber bands sound awesome.

Fact is, if I was a bass teacher and a young kid wanted to start up, I would strongly recommend the SX. But for a pro, bragging about how great they are? Come on.....

No, you're not really a flame warrior, more like the kid that keeps repeating "why" until the other person smashes their keyboard! ;)

Well, that much I will cop to. I think the questions/words "How?" and "Why?" are two of the most important phrases in the English Language. Its my nature to question any and everything until a sufficient answer is given, and then to question that as well.

Out,

Matticus, and his ever reaching quest for enlightenment/knowledge.

Don't be fooled, dude. Lucas can bring it. Ask him what he thinks about metal. Go ahead, dare ya.

I enjoy watching Matty's squabbles, because he's usually taking on someone who is arguing something other than what he is saying. And Matty is such a smartarse about it :D

Ok, okay... you got me :D

I love my fretless SX Jazz that I got for $130. I love, even more, the 5 String fretless Brice I got for $300. Though, if I had the cash to spare I'd certainly be playing something more like a MIA Fender Jazz or a Gibson Thunderbird.

Except that the whole "only doing it because you think you're great"/grunge thing is something you invented. You repeatedly said that Matticus shouldn't speak because he doesn't know you. Yet you constantly post your own interpretation on why some folks use SXs when you don't know them, rather than just accepting the fact that they really do think they sound as good or better. There's also no cult or fanboy mentality that's getting people to agree with a user and not with you. I moderate the forum- he's not even anywhere near the "most popular users" list.

Funny thing is how often you bring 63 P as an example. That's a bass that's more likely than any other to be easily replicated or bettered by a cheap knockoff from modern times. Simplest construction and parts you can get, and it ain't like Leo was stockpiling exotic alder that's been kiln dried for 200 years. He cut corners and saved money everywhere he could. There's just more places to save money these days.

You don't even know me. Like I said, check out the DB side. It's all about name dropping who you hung out with a this and that seminar and master class. Think I am bullshitting? Go see for yourself. It's true NOT because I said it, but because it IS.

Of course, what do I know? I am not a professional forum jockey like you. (yeah, you started posting 3 hours ago and have steadily done so every 2-3 minutes). Sorry, but you blow me away. I can't keep up. And though I made a highly positive post about your band a while back ago, I can't figure out why you singled me out for an attack. Like i said, you don't know me at all...and....my post was not directed to you, but to the denizens of the DB forum...do you even play DB? If not, you have NO idea what they are like. You won't find bigger gear snobs anywhere else. If you are not playing a 20,000 dollar german made bass, you are nothing over there.

I can see how some of the crusty older guys can be intimidating, but IME not too many of the DB forum regulars play $20K or more basses. My main bass cost $6K, which is modest for a DB, and I never got shunned, even well before i was a forum admin or even a mod. In fact, just the opposite: some of the more experienced players took me under their wings. One of these is a bassist who has played and toured with a lot of players I came up listening to on records. Another lives in NY, plays a factory bass that's worth probably $8K, and has written published books on bass line construction. Another mentor on that side is John Goldsby, who I've taught together with at the Aebersold jazz workshops every summer for the past 15 years. He's published numerous books and articles on bass playing, is one of the best musicians I know, and one of the nicest and most generous people I know to boot. Jeremy Allen, one of our mods, is the jazz bass professor at IU, one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, and a great player on top of that. Brian Bromberg pops in from time to time as well, and he's also super nice. And Lynn Seaton's forum is moderated by Lynn himself, so you can always ask questions directly to a master there.

There have always been and always will be snarky people on internet forums. it's part of the nature of the beast. The moderators in the DB forum rely on post reports from regular members to help regulate the forum, as all of the mods are busy and don't have nearly enough time to read everything that goes on. Please feel free to report posts that seem to break the rules, and we'll look into them. In the meantime, don't let a few snarky people scare you away from the forums. I found it a bit intimidating as well at first; in the beginning, i felt some of the same things that you did about the "experts" posting there, until I hear many of them play; once I learned that all I had to do was to click on some links to find out whose walk matched their talk, I became excited to get a chance to share ideas some of these folks. I still do, in spite of the occasional snark from some members. YMMV, of course.

That reminds me...... Where's BigOl'Harry lately?

I asked that earlier.

The young one get run off or move on.

There is nothing to suggest he was po'ed or upset in his last posts.
I always enjoyed his to the point curmudgeonly posts.

Getting up there in age myself, I wonder about the older people. (and learning of a friends death on here)
Just like having a will to take care of your family. I have asked my family to notify business & personal forums I am on that something happened to me.

He paid a premium for the pixie dust, though.

It may be your experience, but it ain't mine. You are honestly going to tell me there is not a whole lot of elitism in the jazz and classical upright world? Oh sure, they are friendly enough, but there is always that undercurrent of hostility. I watch these guys in action. First thing they start doing is showing off how well they can do thumb position vibrato. I have seen this with my own eyes, them doing it and then looking over to see if I was watching them.
And I can remember quite recently, a VERY well known jazz player looking down on me because I dared to bring an orange King DB to a gig. She went much further then just looking down on me, openly and verbally mocking my equipment.

And you know what the funny thing is? I have NEVER had this problem when I have encountered rockabilly and roots players. They are the nicest guys. And not to brag, but I know quite a few of them, or at least my bands have opened for theirs numerous times. Not now, of course. I am strictly into playing classical these days, and though I do come across some nice blokes, the rest of these academic players make me feel like a "towney".

I've got pretty thick skin when it comes to metal-bashing. I even bash it myself sometimes while wearing a King Diamond shirt!

That reminds me...... Where's BigOl'Harry lately?

I've been wondering where he went to as well.

Maybe some metalheads moved in next to him, and now he spends all his free time in their driveway telling them how immature and insecure they are?

Kinda miss the ol' coot, it was like having my very own arch-enemy. :crying:

At least we still have Lucas around to tell us what we're doing wrong! :hyper:

Look, all I am saying is comparing a 100 dollar budget bass made by some chinese 14 year old kid locked in a sweatshop will not and cannot compare to even a mid-level bass.

I have been accused of being a "headstock so-and-so", but I am NOT. I am not saying we all have to play pedulla, ritter and Alembic or fodera....no, not at all....but for a pro and semi-pro player, you should be playing a bass that is at least in the 700-1000 dollar level.

My upright was a little over 2000, and I bargain shopped for it. I got lucky. it was the most resonant bass in the store that day. It might be unsually good for it's price, i'll admit. But no way would I have picked the lowest price one that day. it was maybe 600 bucks and sure felt like it. Chinese made, in a sweatshop, by some 14 year old boy, obviously. I would not have bought it and then said you cannot tell the difference between that and a 20,000 dollar Wilfer.

Truth is, you could compare a 2008 MIA that sold for 1100 to a pre-CBS that sells for 30,000. I doubt there is that much of a difference in tone, and also I don't fall for that holy grail mojo dojo stuff either. Just don't brag about your 100 dollar bass beating them all. That's internet hype, nothing more.
