Do small round speaker grills look cheap to you?

Me, I use the cheap round covers. And the cheap and easy Duratex coating for finish. Yeah, I built that!

I am tempted to whip up some sparkly blue and silver clothe frames for the pair of fEarful 12/6 cubes, but the cheap, tough, round covers will lurk just beneath the clothe.

I priced one out and it was about $38, which isn't terrible. But the cheapskate in me knows that I could do a cloth grill for less than half that! I'm also planning to use the Duratex coating for the cabinet finish. Who knows, maybe I will start with the round covers and see how I like them.

I used them for my 12/6 and I'm ok with how it looked. My 66 I made a grill out of pet screen which is stronger than grill cloth but lighter than metal. Personally I don't care what people think of how my cabs look. I'm much more concerned with the sound.

I suffer from the same snobbery, I think they tend to make a cabinet look DIY. Having said that, there are cases where they "really tie the room together." There's no way I'd replace the round grill on my TNT, I think it's pretty classy:

Had some on some home-made cabs. Not spectacular but they did their job.

The weight savings can be two or three pounds, the cone protection is excellent, and not since my earliest prototypes have any of my cabs ever had a problem with grille rattle. And with a big, heavy-cone, long-excursion woofer, grille rattle can be an issue.

They don't always look cheap.

I am less concerned about looks and more concerned with protecting the cones of my expensive drivers. Do I prefer one overall grille? Yes I do, it's how my Acme cabinets are done. My self built rehearsal cabinet has a round grille and that's fine for what it is.

Yes they do. Put some cheap Piezo tweeters up there and it will look like an EBay knockoff "DJ" speaker "system". Just my own personal view.

I bought some full grilles for one of my cabinets once, was going to change over, but just couldn't get happy about the increase in weight and cost plus a decrease in structural rigidity (my semi-recessed bugeye baffles are double-thicked).

I suppose if people stop buying my cabs I'll have to rethink it, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with orders as it is.

Depends on needs as well I would hazard a guess? If minimum weight carrying around is a concern all well and good. If the guys complained about a couple pounds I would tell them fine, sing real loud the PA stays at home I am a GOF though .
