Don't fall for the negative bias in the former, it obviates your concern.

So it's an insult, based on the concept of women being an inferior gender, and assigned as a nickname for female genitalia?
It's overwhelmingly used in the plural and "Hey boys, how's it going?" is perfectly acceptable.
I wouldn't think of saying "Hey, girl how's it going?" to an individual female friend. However, if 4 of them turn up at once...
Pretty sure I'm older than you. But maybe I've had more opportunity in my life to realize the things I've done (unwittingly in most cases) to put others down. I also decided to change. It appears you have made a different choice.
Being call the male genitalia isn't exactly a compliment....

I'm aware I'm in the middle of an ongoing back-and-forth. I'm not joining in on any side apart from the one I'm on, which is that of language and our freedom to use it and recognise it as an evolving beast.
Or possibly evolving as a replacement for the concepts of reluctance and cowardice previously expressed by "Hir who hesitates is lost."
Clearly it isn't. The term has at least two very distinct meanings and the meaning is very clear in this case. Your insistence on their being only one interpretation, the one that you dictate, makes the moral high ground achieved by it, merely a conjuring trick for those prepared to take things on face value.
Frankly because I don't see why I should tiptoe on eggshells around the sensitivities of minorities. The whole non-binary thing has been around for decades if not centuries and I was pretty non-binary myself in the early 70s/glam era, but I didn't expect people to change their language to suit me and nor did I bleat on about being offended all the time. The modern era is full of people who take themselves and their fragile egos way too seriously.
