Do you believe in ghosts?

Yeah...real tough with all that padding. Handbags at five paces. The girls of Liverpool dish out more punishment than those girls.
Padding didn't help this guy (usually they try to remove the helmet 1st, but his guy's accuracy didn't require that).

Have you guys heard the Souls/Dark Energy Correlation Theory?. As you all probably know around 90% of the universe as we know it is dark matter + dark energy, you all probably also know that dark energy is increasing at a different rate than the universe. Recent studies found out that the rate at what dark energy increases is not a constant and it changes notably from time to time. Since this is located light-years of us the information we get is very old but they found out spikes of the increasing rate between period of times that are consistent with the time that separate different deathly catastrophes on earth, for instance they noticed a spike in the increasing rate separated from another spike by the exact period of time that separates WWI and WWII. So basically they found out there is a correlation between the mortality rate on earth and the rate at what dark energy increases in the universe, which led them to assume that maybe souls become part of dark energy after we die. This is a very recent theory so you probably haven't heard of it but what do you all think?

We would need souls for any of that to be even remotely plausible.

"Dark energy" kinda sounds like a meth buzz.

I thought you are a physicist (er more accurately, a teacher of science). You should know that hockey is at a much higher velocity than the beautiful game; collisions are much more forceful especially since on the boards, the forces have no where to go but smash bones. Therefore pads are requred, not to mention the solid 160g puck flying around at 80 miles per hour; not some mamby pamby sphere full of air.

C'mon teach.

Interesting. I would like to see some links or possibly some info on this. So....I'm a a little confused. Are you saying that the increase in dark energy causes the higher mortality rate, or vice-versa?

I watched an interesting video that explained elements of quantum theory in "layman's terms". It was interesting. If I understood it correctly, and if it were true, then there really is no "reality", only what our consciousness has decided is real and what is not. Which would lead to the possibility of different dimensions, different states of being, and reality being only a construct of our own mind. It made me think of "The Matrix". This could explain a few things like ghosts, voices recorded on electronic equipment, etc. But then again, many of the ideas are a little more than I can really totally understand. But some of it makes sense. Like the color blue, for example. I see a color and I recognize it as blue. But what if it looks different to you? What if your blue is actually my red? Interesting to say the least.

I also read another theory that addressed ghosts in terms of time. The way I remember it presented was that time is not linear. In some cases it folds back over itself occasionally. What people see as "ghosts" are really just "imprints" in time that have replayed to those sensitive enough to see them. Like taking a piece of paper and folding it over twice in one spot....the sheet has area, but some of that area gets folded back and overlaps what came before or after it.

Oh well. So many theories. And not enough brain power to comprehend half of them.

@jmverdugo,...

apparently what you have mentioned is truely an amazing bit of research being done by physicist! the theory is the soul is a plasma based life-form that sort of hitches a ride in we humans symbiotically(sp). when the body dies, the soul is jettisoned back to the dark energy where it originated. these researchers are claiming their findings prove the existence of a soul,.. even claiming to know its weight!

You have got to be kidding me! .... Guys, first, I owe you all an apology, I actually came up with this "theory" (the one that I posted), I made it up just for fun when I found out about how physicist couldn't find a reason about why dark energy was increasing, it made sense to me and made me think but I have not done any experiments or any research at all, all I posted is a product of my imagination based on the fact that dark energy is increasing in size. I posted it here just to see your reactions and actually there was supposed to be a "smiley" at the end.

That been said, I choose to believe we have a soul and I choose to believe there something afterlife, main reason it's just because it makes life easier. I don't believe in ghosts the way they are represented some times, I think if they exists are probably shapeless and colorless beings, some kind of energy that was part of us, they don't talk, don't see and they are probably not sentient beings, we are energy, we can't be destroyed, we are just transformed. If some of that energy becomes dark matter this would explain things like object moving and steps, etc ... Dark energy have mass and can create a gravitational force, it could also create cohesive force? If this dark energy leaves our body where would it go? Of course where the rest of the dark energy is.... I would be the first to admit this is pseudo science and more based on a mix of imagination and forced logic but it would be pretty darn cool if this would end up been true! It's also very interesting to see other people thinking something similar, thanks for sharing the link pacojas.

If you guys liked my soul/dark energy theory you should hear my explanation for the big foot sightings... Now that is crazy...

Get back to me when you stop mixing imperial units with decimal units, then we can talk physics. Or more accurately I can teach you some science.

C'mon kid.

I watched an interesting video that explained elements of quantum theory in "layman's terms". It was interesting. If I understood it correctly, and if it were true, then there really is no "reality", only what our consciousness has decided is real and what is not.

There are a few who interpret quantum mechanics like that, but it's not what the prevalent Copenhagen Interpretation means. For it to be true it would mean consciousness has some magical property rather than it being an emergent property (a ghost in the machine) of a series of fluctuations in chemical and electrical states and messages in the brain. Emergent behaviour also appears in ant hills but you wouldn't say an ant hill is conscious.

One quantum mechanical interpretation is that all things are possible at once, and our observation simply allows a projection of this into a form we can perceive. An example might be if you close one eye. The world is in three dimensions, but now you are perceiving a two dimensional projection of the real three dimensional world. The world hasn't become two dimensional, though. Another analogy would be solving a differential equation for a spherical body (which makes it easy) then converting that to cartesian coordinates, and one that is a better analogy for the underlying mathematics.

The issue with that interpretation is that it means all possibilities of all possible outcomes of everything for all time are always present so how does the universe know we all want the same projection into our perceptions? Hence E from Eels' father's many universes interpretation that each time a projection is created the universe is split into one with one projection, one with another, and we inhabit only one of those projections or universes. I have no idea how you would test this.

Yeah artifacts of a switch in Canada to metric when I was in grade school. Most people my age switch back and forth from mph and kph in conversation. Bad habits die hard.

Then again the UK marks road speed in mph doesn't it? So cars go 50mph and footballs go in kph there? Who knew?

Back to science...

So you're saying my assessment of needing pads for the greater forces in hockey vs not needing them for football is flawed?

You know, i'm trying to have fun with you in that hockey / football post despite our recent unpleasant discourses. You might recognize that and attempt move past it like a man. See a little ribbing for what it is. The part about teacher vs. physicist was not a crack, rather my understanding that if you aren't doing research and publishing for a living....

On topic, I believe the ghost of Henri Richard still rifles 'em in from the blue line! A wrist shot like that could never die.

I don't care how you label me, but I do remember your thinly veiled barbs in your "those that can, do" thread.

As for moving on 'like a man'? Er...wasn't it you that brought up the 'spooning' comment I made (months ago) just the other day?

And actually, by mixing units, I meant that you quoted speed in mph and mass in g.

Anyway, it's all good in the hood....I woke up to a shiny new trophy for getting 100 'likes'....which makes me...er....hang on, let's see if my Physics degree can help with the numbers here...er...er....just about five times more likeable than you.

:D

Yeah I got the mph grams bit: mph, kph, g, oz, kg,lbs. my age and up are all over the place in references to measures here. That's why I referred to it at the beginning of the post and asked about UK speed postings.

Congrats on your trophy you're a real legend in your own mind.

:D
