In the back corner nook, thare she hangs: The Fender P-bass. I stuck a felt pad just above the headstock to protect the edge from bumping against the under-stairs ceiling when lifting it out.

I don't know if there are any benefits or damage done over the long term by hanging them, but I do not. I put them in hard shell cases when not in use.

I like this setup! I have 10 basses, 3 electric guitars, and 3 acoustic guitars.

String swing for me. The house is climate controlled and dust is not a problem.

My solution for the upright is is a modified fruit crate. Top edges are beveled and cork strips protect the edges. The bass can sit tight against a wall.

I've been thinking about grabbing one of these. Is it as solid/sturdy as the smaller Hercules stands (I've been using the 2 and 3 space stands for years)?
