Sorry about your loss.

My cat absolutely loves the sound and/or vibration from my electric shaver and toothbrush. She will drop whatever she’s doing (usually sleeping) to come to me. She wants to get close to the source of those (to her) sensory stimulants.

I love dogs and cats as long as someone else owns them! No pets for me, thank you. It's an added expense that I'm not willing to take on.

But I have been getting some major laughs lately from some of the cat video's on You Tube. Cat's falling in bathtubs, cats and plastic bags. They aren't getting hurt and its hilarious!!

When I adopted my current cat I had to fill out a questionnaire and be interviewed. One of the questions was “How much are you prepared to spend per year on food, toys, and vet bills?” I estimated $1K. The person interviewing me said that’s pretty close to right on. Some prospective pet adopters really have no idea.

I probably spend AU$1100-1200 on 80 kg of dog barring unforeseen events*. About halve that for USD. The big saving is they run on bones and leftovers. The vet loves their weight and teeth. Their breath don't stink and the poopie about jumps in the bag of its own free will.

There's an industry around pets that does the owners very few favors. And I'm not talking about Cesar Millan.

* $3000 on some form of poisoning would be the record. "She ate something or something ate her" was the best they could tell us. Said it wasn't snakebite.

I get that its not for apartment dwellers. But I start them outdoors. By the time they hit the inner sanctum, they woud no more desecrate it than starve themselves.

Failing a useable outdoors, hierarchical structures are a handy alternative. Even arbitrary ones. Couches are for people. A nice bed right under the reverse cycle aircon is for doggie, and such. People eat first and dogs sit and look at food in the bowl while they wait for the all clear. Watch out for ovrreach on that one. Realistic intervals only. work up to turning your back. Then walking further and further away. Round the corner is a big milestone. Doggy's genes are already expecting that. A fair bit of misbehaviour is puppy figuring out where they belong in a dynamic command chain. I know most people don't like to discipline dogs. But they'd be doing themselves and the dog a favour if they did. Lavish praise and expressions of disgust are the tools of that trade. Little morality plays. And early intervention. Stay out in front of the learning process to prevent habits forming.

When your dog has an idea, the first filter it goes through should be "What would Lassie do?"

Oh yeah they're generally very sweet dogs. As a vet I'd take a pittie over a German Shepherd in the clinic anyday (they're a fine breed but much more aggressive and unpredictable with us). Good luck with yoir search.

Though I love animals generally, no pets here at Casa Nedmundo. We love cats, but my wife is allergic, and I seem to be developing an allergic reaction to them. She loves dogs, and I'm sure we could find one I'd like, but we're not interested in how much care they require. When our kids were young, we had a rabbit, some gerbils, and a few hermit crabs. The rabbit was a surprisingly great pet for many years.
