Do You Keep a Guitar in Your House for Visitors?

Since I have been in North Minneapolis, pretty much every guest I've ever had has been someone I have a romantic involvement with.

I do have plenty of guitars on hand, however...

Sure do. I have a MiM Strat sitting in a stand. I also have Yamaha keyboard. They're mainly for my enjoyment, but my brother-in law is a pretty accomplished keyboardist and my sister sings quite well. So, when they stop by we always get something going. But rarely does a guitarist stop by without having one of his own with him . . .

I have 2. One is usually toyed with by my sister in law or one of my daughters.

The other is so I can noodle and feel better about my bass skills.

I have a cheap electric and a small guitar amp. I also have a couple of acoustics. They are mostly for my enjoyment. I'm not sure I want musicians roaming around in my house.

I have a sort of guitar - it's an instrument in the guitar range. So long as the visiting guitarist is cool with an instrument tuned in fifths, no problem. Fripp could play it, of course.

Makes no sense to me that you would take up space with a guitar that a bass could occupy.

I've got a rare baritone 6 string that's available for anyone to play on, as are my 3 basses. I'm not stingy... at home. Anywhere/anyone else is a COMPLETELY different story.

Yep, I do now. Like me, my brother learned to play some keys and guitar when he was in college but hardly touched for several decades - and he's 10 years older than I am. Earlier this year he bought a nice guitar and start taking lessons and is making pretty impressive progress for such an old fart (he's 64).

He lives about 1000 miles away but he intentionally does marketing for contracts in this area so he can visit our parents while he's here on business. When he does that, he usually plans to stay one night at our house so we can jam a bit. Not only does he use my Strat, which I've hardly touched in 15+ years, I also bought a decent amp so he has something to play through when he's here.

I've also talked to a friend at work who's planning to pick up guitar again after a long break, so I told him I've already got gear at my house if he wants to start playing together.

I have 6 guitars hanging on the wall in my studio, and one more that is not. They are not for my friends, but rather for me. On the rare occasions when my guitar player friends come over, they bring their own guitars.

We live far enough away from most of our friends that this "musicians roaming about in our house" thing is not much of a problem.

Usually I hide them if a guitar-playing friend is coming over. I play gigs all the time so I'm not really into living room jams, especially if they're not a professional musician.

Even if you don't play, do you have a guitar in case a friend drops over and a spontaneous jam breaks out?

Do I keep, a dedicated guest instrument on hand? No. I haven't had a jam session in my place of residence since the 80s, and don't expect one any time soon.

To your original question, I will not hand off any of my gear to just anybody but a seasoned pro that I can trust.

I keep a cheap Epiphone Les Paul around that I bought before I got back into playing bass. Nobody has ever used it, save for one time when my guitar player broke a string on his Strat and didn't have a replacement handy. I'm a gear junky, so I'm always eyeballing stuff to add to my music room. I'd love to get a Hughes Kettner TubeMeister 5 and a G&L Tribute guitar, but I'm afraid it would all just sit there collecting dust.
