Do you name your pets weird names?

We used to name our critters after movie and TV characters. Our last pair of cats were named Thelma and Louise. We had a litter of pups that were named Bob, Carol, Ted, and Alice; and another named Fred, Betty, Barney, and Wilma. A friend started doing this also and they have a pair of geese named Randolph and Mortimer. They had goslings that are named Louis, Billy Ray, Ophelia, and Penelope.

Now I name our dogs after musical things - songs, performers, bands, or characters in songs. Our current dogs are Jethro (Tull), (Mustang) Sally, Angus (Young), and Lucy (in the Sky). Prior to them we had Maxwell (Silverhammer), Eleanore (Rigby), Rita (the Meter Maid), and (Jumpin) Jack (Flash).

I guess these aren't exactly weird - just moderately amusing.

One of our dogs - a Pit Bull/Dachshund mix (yes, he looked a little strange) was nameless when we brought him home from the pound. For some reason, he just seemed like a "Skeezix" to me, so that became his name. I guess he reminded me of the kid in the old "Gasoline Alley" comic strip I liked when I was a kid (yes, I'm that old). Aside from weighing 55 lbs., ( all of it bone and muscle) and wanting to be picked up over your head all the time, he was a wonderful dog. My ex-wife got him in the divorce, and I kept Cody, the Golden Retriever. Who, because he was the color of a #1 Idaho Baking Potato, I always called "Spud". If he heard "Cody", there was usually some discipline involved; that was rarely required. Far as he was concerned, he was Spud.:)

Our bunny JoJo is actually short for JoJo Mocha. His fur was lighter in color when he was a baby. On the ride home with him I said to my wife that his fur color looked like a jamocha shake. She looked at him, said jamocha, and he perked up. Shortened it to JoJo and it stuck, he responded to it as his name right away.

Have a pair of tortoises named Seymour and Edna. Another one named Petunia.

No, he wasn't a Bloodhound; that was his name. One of my favorite cult movies, too. Based on one of Phillip K. Dick's short stories; "A Dog and his Boy", set in a Post-Apocalyptic world where telepathic dogs were smarter than humans, who were kept as useful pets because they had opposable thumbs. :)

My current Goldie is Kona. He was going to be Coda, which if maligned badly enough can be tail in Italian. Then discovered a a local musical bud had recently lost a hound named coda.... Figured I'd wave it off... Being he is 16 months and a typical Golden, his nick name is Alan Greenspan... You know, irrational exuberance ;-)

We have a cat named Jeekers. One summer years ago, an old Mainer I knew was building a deck behind his house. Everytime he nailed his thumb with the hammer, he would take the lord's name in vein. His wife eventually laid down the law and he migrated to screaming Jeekers CAT! In honor of old Doc Ferris, I now am caregiver / life support the felon known as the same...

My cat's name is 7. She's a Hemingway and that's the number of toes she's got on each foot. Awesome animal, absolutely loves people who hate cats. Most contrary animal I've ever met.

My last dog was named Esav. He was a French Mastiff so being red and hairy the rabbi we got him from named him after Jacob's brother Esau. I miss that dog beyond words.

Jeekers is a great cat name.



I had brother and sister Siamese cats back in the early 90's While the names weren't exactly weird per say, I did get a lot of questions about how I came up with the name for the female , which was Jimjin,


Hours spent looking at the phonebook for an Asian sounding name till I found that one.

7 toed cat, awesome!


I once saw a 6 clawed cat walk by and rip the hell out of a buddy's arm.


He had accidentally burnt the cats nose earlier while not looking and dropping his hand down by his side with a lit "cigarette" while sitting.




Cat went and hid for an hour and when it came back my bud tried to reach down and pet it.



6 toed kitty made hamburger meat of of his arm!







Good times.....
